Hi all. We are planning a trip to northern KZN towards the end of October this year and are hearing conflicting reports about Mkhuze.

Is this park still a viable option? From a safety and facilities viewpoint?

We have heard that there is an alternative campsite close by but cannot find it!

All comments appreciated.

Ek het jare terug daar op n wilds plaas vir so twee weke gebly. Daar aangekom by die mooiste chalet en in die bos. Was skoon in vervoering. Eerste nag trek ek en slaap in my bakkie tweede nag in n hotel gaan bly.

Die spinnekoppe in daardie chalet is groter as my vuis, nie een nie baie en oral. Hulle het my baie ontuis laat voel en het die boodskap gekry. In die Hotel lekker gebly.

I stayed at Mhkuze for 3 nights in February this year.  The campsite is separate from the main camp and it totally by itself.  As far as I felt,it was as safe as any other camp site that I have stayed in.  There is only power from 8 - 10 in the morning and the in the evening for 3 - 4 hours(cant remember the times).  The showers work on gas, but I found the ablution sorely lacking in maintenance.  There are a good amount of trees and shade and 2 ablution blocks. Taps are spread around.  You have to pay entrance fees to the local trust which is separate from the Kwazulu Natal Parks Board.  There is 15 kilometers of gravel road from Mkhuze, but the road is not too bad except for the last 3 kilometers where it climbs over the ridge. Signage is not great from Mhkuze.  The park itself is nice and the hides are great for birding.  Fuel is available at the main camp and they have a small shop with basics. The camp site is near the entrance gate, so park your caravan and then drive the 8km to the main camp to book in. I landed up driving all the way with my caravan and it was not easy to turn around in the main camp.  Most roads are tarred and there are a few gravel roads.

I towed a Gypsey Caravette 6B with a Hilux so the gravel road was alright, if you go slowly.

They do have the Big 5 but only saw buffalo and elephants. Beware of monkeys and baboons in the campsite and drop the roof of your caravan if you have one. Monkeys damaged one of the gauze windows.  If you are relying on full time electricity, it can be a problem.

I must say that I enjoyed my stay, even if it sounds like there were too many issues, and as I am a birder, it was really great and other parks can definitely learn from Natal Parksboard about building hides at waterholes.

Ek sal ook trek as daar sulke spinnekoppe so groot soos vlermuise is.

Welcome to the forum Stephen.

As mentioned security is the main consideration when camping these days.

Interested to see some more comments re. Mkuzi.
