Good day,
We went to Maphelane and it was great, but had troubles with the water.
So now we are looking at Sugarloaf? IS it a good place to go?
HOt water? Electricity? Ablutions?

We took our grandkids there 2 years ago this coming July. The Park is very big and the ablutions are "tired". Hot water was not a problem. We got a site near the gate which is manned 24 hrs so security was fine. Also saw security patrolling regularly through the night. Monkeys are a problem. On one of the afternoons a couple walking back to their site came across a leopard standing on one of the sites. They got the fright of their lives. Hope this helps.

...and we were there when a croc took a mans dog and half his leg ......smile

Mozzies, crocs, sleeping branches, people shooting, exhausted ablutions, leopards. The list is endless.

Sorry, what was the question again?

ps. the whole dog and only half the mans leg.

Sorry Andre - pets are not allowed!

Hurricane - your comment "No prob...in them old Army days we shot them one by one with a R1 :) refering to Mozzies - That must be a very expensive way to get rid of mozzies - a R1 for each one you kill!!!

Dorian - it serves you right for talking the rain with you!

OK - so back to the subject.

How's the camping at Sugarloaf? Alan, seen any more leopards there?

Regards.
This is how we spent the last fifteen years - working our buts off!

No...no...no... It's the place you WANT to go camping I'ts exciting....

Years ago, I was at Eden Park (had a resident green mamba in the roof trusses of the ablutions.... Used to wait until another somebody sat on the loo then call out " Oh! look our resident mamba's back in the roof"!).....

Then sit back n listen to the consternasie.....

Anyhow, I took a drive to Sugar-loaf to scope it out. On one site there was a tent with vervets jumping all over it. They where going mad!!!!

I remember driving up to the tent, took out my .38 (just in-case) but the Monkey's ran off ito the bush but stayed close and boy was there a lot of screaming going on.

Anyhow, the tent door un-zipped and a rather pale looking 20 something dude stepped out....

Turns out, earlier he was sitting at the table and a vervet ran up & grabbed the bread off the table, he got cross, grabbed his loaded spear-gun and shot at the Monkey. Unfortunatly, he actually shot the darn thing, the arrow went right through the monkey.

It ran off still attached to the bow, the bow got tangled in the brush and the barb on the arrow prevented the monkey from seperating from the arrow, and the wounded monkey was sitting nearby in the bush screaming, which then brought the rest of the troup down on him in defence, and they )there where two youngsters) took refuge in their tent, and that's when I pitched up.

I never saw the outcome, I just went back to the gate and reported it there...

But, what an adventure! I promise you those guys never ever forgot THAT trip...

Now that's why you SHOULD go camping there.... Live a little... Get some excitement...cool

Truth be told, haven't been back there in.........Oh, more that 20 Years, so I can't comment on the state of the camp....

But I can tell 2 more tales about the big croc who lived under the bridge @ honeymoon bend and fed at the gutting table @ the launching ramp in the Estuary....... If anyone want's...

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....
