I went on these routes (October 2021) on the way to Colesberg and it is not recommended to be traveled on by campers with caravans and it is not advised to be driven in cars.
We was under impression that the road was repared.
This road is not a joke and is damaging to the vehicles and caravans no matter 4x4 or off road caravans.
Use the main National roads and be safe to travel.
Pot holes are tree hole size and trucks do not give you no way either to pass as they are messing up the road surface.
Anyone that can give us a clear report on that road conditions from the Freestate roads department if they still exist or any farmers on that route it will be really appreciate the info.
Dis n skande.......
Die land gaan orals agteruit.
Dankie vir die inligting.
Ek verstaan al hoe meer David Kramer waar hy sing......."Skipskop.......Skipkop se koebaai. " Ek dink ons is nou daar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had the same terrible experience on that route at about the same time. However, from Wepener past Zastron and then down through Graaff Reinet was good (had been bad the year before!). Really mostly the Fouriesburg / Ficksburg section that was terrible - lost a wheel trim, a cover over the ac air vents and screws holding an internal light fitting on my motorhome all came loose, caused by the poor road condition.
Hi there Robbo, thank you for your reply and the others too.
Yes it is a shame that roads are in a horrible and dangerous situation and the tourists do not know this.
I heard that the road has been closed for repairs by a state report until it is repaired and viable for all vehicles.
Well the farmers and clients on that route will be able to forward the produce and even the people that travel there with children for school purposes will be safer then but now it is a danger to all and every vehicle.
I did a tour via the main route N3, N5, N1, N12, R62 and back via N1, N5, N3 to N1 home with safety only the road through Bethlehem is still not up to scratch but it is ok slow travelling.
