I am camping where there is a rinse toilet. But the water supply is sometimes cut for days. So I filled my Portapotti 145 with the required chemicals in waste and rinse tanks. To use during these cutoff days. Do I still need to flush and change the chemicals every week, if I havent used it at all?
We only use Dettol and Jik in our's.
If we don't use it, we still clean it every morning.
Where there is a lack of water supply, we use excess water to clean.
Thanks. What I actually want to know , is if the chemicals will cause harm or deteriorate when left in the tanks if the toilet is not used.
We only cleaned ours when it was full: even if it took a week, or longer. The chemicals work well.
thanks. but it still doesn't answer my question ...

I found that the chemicals do have a reduced effect by covering the urine smell over time. But there is a direct relation to how much you have used (full) the PP en how long you leave it just standing.
I normally do not let it stand longer than two weeks. But in general the smell will be your guidance.

We use a homemade mixture for the top tank for no1 only. Once I forgot to empty it after a camp and could not belief that after 3 months there was no odours in the caravan. Needless to say it was cleaned on the spot before the memory............

We used our van and the porta pot (no 1 only) last in September 2020.
Before leaving our last camp, actually the day before, I cleaned the PP as it was time to do so, due to use.
I use the Thetford sachet which is biodegradable (green one). Filled it to the app 2 litres of water in the waste holding tank.
We used it that night.
We then went home 22 September, parked the van and prepared to leave for Pretoria. I forgot to clean the PP.
When back home in February 2021, I remembered the PPotti and opened it to clean. No smell, no sign of deterioration, no nothing. I considered no cleaning it as we plan to leave for long term camp end of March.
So, even if there is an expiry date, I have seen the effectiveness of this longer term. I expected problems of staining and smell and growth of whatever could grow, but there was nothing.
Clean as the day I prepared it for use, four and a half months later!
So my answer to your question: I do not think so.
thanks, that's good news
