Morning all road users:
Have just been to on trip to KNP for Easter and am very sad to report the pathetic road conditions.
The R540 from Belfast to Dullstroom is currently under repair and not as bad as what it was during last year. However the section from Dullstroom to Lydenburg is BAD the closer you get to Lydenburg / Mashashing. Be aware some areas is REALLY bad and will cause serious damage to your vehicle and may be the cause of serious accidents. It is possible to hide a heard of elephants in some of these dongas!!!
The roads in Lydenburg are ALL BAD, the gravel roads in KNP are like highways compared to the roads in this town.
The R36 from Ludenburg via Origstad to the tunnels are as poor as from Dullstroom. The road after the tunnels is substantially better condition with a few areas where the surface is braking up and some potholes.
It is REALLY SAD STATE that our roads to a national tourist location such as KNP is in such poor condition. Do not accept that the damage is due to the rains, the roads have been like this for at least two / three years only getting worse by the day.
Be CAREFUL.
Thanks for update.
Welcome to the forum.
Welkom hier op die forum.
Dankie vir die terugvoer.
Welcome Johannes.
I had a blow out and damage to my caravan just 12Km after Dullstroom to Lydenburg last Nov. Bad roads.
Ja dis hartseer hoe die paaie daar lyk
Welkom!

It seems to be especially the Mpumalanga secodary roads that are in a terrible state of repair.
We find the Limpopo province roads in much better condition overall.
What the authorities need to look at is the destruction of road infrastructure by heavy duty transport.
Look at the main road through Dullstroom. It is all breaking up due to heavy duty traffic. Now the small number of tax payers and local municipality need to carry the cost of repairs. Those trucks just drive through and do not contribute one cent towards the reparation of the damage, nor the economy of Dullstroom. Same for Lydenburg (Mashishing).
But now, this is South Afrika: the truck is probably carrying mined coal or uranium from a friend's or politician's mine with a truck owned by a friend of same. So, let the taxpayer pay. Its their road.
Tragedy is, it is not just Satafrica, this also goes for the rest up north.
Oh, should the SA Railways & Harbours be again what it was!
