Edge if i remember correctly you would have asked a friend over the weekend about the bypass in Mthata. I only know the one you described on your previous post, but maybe there is  a better one. Thanks for the input.

I would go E.L - King - Grahamstown - P. E. There were no roadworks on 3/1. I will never use the coastal road. Take it easy through King.

piet, i discovered a face book sight called ROADS IN THE EASTERN CAPE all the information you need is on there.

two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Oom Murphy het my vanoggend besoek. Toe ek die Fortuner vanoggend wou aansit toe is die battery pap. (darem amper 7 jaar gehou).

Summorised, the short-cut/bypass road is not suitable for small vehicles with little or no ground clearance, as well as on road caravans. Basically, not suitable for anything which would not be comfortable on BAD roads...

hi guys, i have been talking to those in the know on the face book site titled ROADS IN THE EASTERN CAPE , the general consensuses is as follows,

coming from kokstad side, turn right at the first robot when you get to umtata, its the R61 and is sign posted TRUCK BYPASS continue with this road until sisson street ,[ will also be sign posted truck bypass ]  turn left into sisson street and continue, it will T junction into N2 on the other side of umtata. there are five speed humps on sisson street and been told to idle over them, [ they apparently a little larger then usual ]  the people i have spoken to have recently traveled this way and say the key here is continuity , there are no stops. bear in mind i will only be traveling this way shortly, have not been there yet. however those i have spoken to this the safest way to cross umtata, i guess i will find out shortly.

have also checked this on a map of umtata , it checks out and makes sense.

Thanks Edge and George. If everything went according to plan Susan and I will go that way on Wednesday with the Fortuner and Fleetline. As mentioned earlier the road seems to be fine, it is only to find the safest way through Mthata. In the event of no better comments i am prepared to give the bypass as described by George a go.

Thanks George, this then is past the western side of Umtata. The route I first mentioned.

The second route is around the eastern side of Umtata and on gravel...

Hierdie was genoeg vir Susan.

Wens julle 'n voorspoedige reis toe.

Unfortunately anything on a roof rack that does not have a visible lock and chain will belong to someone else.

Piet,

An alternate route is from Kokstad to Matatiele, Mt Fletcher, Maclear, Ugie and Elliot.

From there you will either go south-east to East London, OR,

South-west to Queenstown an then on to the western sectors of the country.

This will probably cut off at least 200 km from your existing planned trip. I drove this route in October and it was a lot less stressful than going through Umtata.

Also very nice scenery and the road was in very good condition...
