This is not camp related and may belong in Comedy Corner.  It could be of interest to some.

You may recall that some 8 years ago there was a big push to get property owners to register their cycads and obtain permits for possession, etc.     At that time we had to work through various Provincial Dept's to apply for and obtain a TOPS permit.   The cost was R50.

I did that for the plants in my possession.  Received a permit in 2012 from Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development.   Filed it and forgot about it.

This week my niece, who is selling up in Wierda Park, and who is handing her very nice collection of fairly large cycads to her kids in Polokwane, phoned to ask where must she apply for a transport permit.  All numbers that were valid in 2012, are not answered.  I then dig out my permit to find that I am in illegal possession as the permit was issued for 7 years only - same as the niece's.

After some googling, I find that the TOPS permits are now solely dealt with by the National Dept of Environmental Affairs.

If you need to read about the TOPS permits for your cycads, elephants, rhinos, tortoises - all on the same form - see https://www.environment.gov.za/topspermitandregistrationapplicationprocess .  Can you believe they made the latter part all one word !!!!

Groete

Sterkte Theo.

Ek is mal oor Broodbome.

Had them in my previous garden with the permits that was supplied by the Nursery.  And I am currently making up a new collection in my new garden.

Three was removed from a garden and they were left on the dump.  If I did not save them they were would have rotten by now.  Others I bought from a Nursery.  Thanks for the link and information.  I will apply for the permits asap and I will keep on applying just to be nuisance if no one helps me.

Apart from the three I got from the dump the rest I atleast have receipts from the nursery so I never removed them from the wild.

If someone do not want theirs anymore I will take them and apply for the permits.

Mine never had permits and never will. I buy my bread at the supermarket, so never new that it grew on trees. I am not a horticulturist and only know that thorn trees have thorns and flowers look pretty and you burn braai wood. I know that ignorance of the law is no excuse, but there are a lot of alien plants growing even in our National Parks. If the people that are there to protect them, do not know which plant is which, how would I, as a laymen, know what all the different species are. I do not transport them anywhere, they were there when I purchased the house 30 years ago and they they remain in the garden...

I applied for and got a permit many years ago - just a piece of A5 paper with a stamp and a signature on it. I have it filed away somewhere, but I suppose I am in trouble now because my cycad has produced 3 offspring and I have failed to register their existence. Maybe I should do so - might get lucky and get child support.laughing

Been there--done it. ( Talking about the bathroom )

The need for permits came as a result of the wholesale decimating of cycad forests in the Eastern Cape and KZN in the years prior to 2012.  Some members may recall that very large plants were uprooted and just left whereas others were transported to some very grand building projects by unscrupulous owners.

Permits issued by sellers were cancelled and all owners or persons in possession had to reapply for permits.

My neighbour is currently in Cape Town and back in the office in Pretoria tomorrow.   He will check on the process and the who or which office is dealing with the permits and provide feedback.   I will then post an update.

Plants with a diameter of 15cm are considered adult plants and those with lesser diameters are seedlings.

Groete

Broodbome by my vorige huis.
