Onrusrivier Caravan Park revisited
We have just spent 7 very pleasant nights in the Onrusrivier caravan park, near to Hermanus. We had no security incidents this time, what a relief after the last fiasco 2 years ago when we were robbed twice in successive nights.
We were of course much more security conscious this time and did not leave any belongings outside the caravan at night. We locked everything away in our aluminium canopy on our bakkie.
The ablutions are still immaculate as always and our one small dog was accepted. We have a 1m high garden fence that we erect in front of out tent to keep her from roaming and always use a leash when walking her. Plastic poop bags always go with too. There were other small dogs in the park and there really was no problem with any of them. Better behaved than some humans!
Refuse is collected daily, there is visible security and the park grounds are well maintained. Brick braais have been built on each stand. The electrical mini-subs are new.
Onrusrivier and the greater Hermanus area offers so much to do and many excellent restaurants and every retail outlet you can think of. For us Capetonians it is only a 2 hour drive to get there, convenient for that weekend away trip.
Onrus is located on the beach and there are lovely walking paths all along the coastline.
Only one thing is still required and that is the electrification of the perimeter fence. That will keep the criminals away for sure.
Wish everyone who took their dogs to caravan parks would do as you do, i.e. leash and poop bags. Just hate having a dog come sniff around pee on our things and then make a poop that we have to clean up. Just this afternoon, here at Jeffreys Bay, a small Min Pin came into our caravan as if it was it‘s home.
Then again I think management is also at fault for not enforcing the rules of the park concerning dogs.

Glad you had a great time. Yes doggies can be a problem but if you keep them on a leash and have control over them they can be a pleasure.
My daughter has a small dog. She is old now, 13 years if I remember correctly. She never wanders of and when going on a walk she is always on a leash. And she carries her own poopbag in a plastic-bone-like-holder attached to her leash harness.
All these caravan resorts that are mentioned here on the forum are noted in my to do booklet. We will surely visit this Caravan Park in future

Jeffreys Bay is another that allows dogs.
We had someone 2 sites away with a Min Pin, they allowed the dog to roam freely. It would pee and crap all over if you left anything outside he would come and mark it. Yesterday afternoon the dog came into our van as if was at home.
This morning 06h30 they opened their door and out came the dog barking at it‘s shadow, apparently the management has spoken to the them the past few days but they just ignored them. Perhaps they got the hint and left this morning, needless to say I was happy that they left barking dog and all.
There are other dogs here however the owners have them on a leash and they are not left to just roam everywhere, they are all fine.
I’m going to put my foot right in it ( the poo). I absolutely accept and understand that there are those dog owners who love and control their dogs. However there are unfortunately also those who don’t and allow their dogs to be a nuisance. I have absolutely sense of humour failure whe a dog P’s on my caravan wheel or C’s in in a public place with the C just being left there for someone to step in. It is because of those inconsiderate owners that I think dogs should simply not be allowed in caravan parks. They need to be left at home where they can be confined to their own yards. I know I’m going to be shot down…. but that’s my view
Never too old to have a happy childhood
We had a small dog that occation accompanied us so I do have empathy with dog owners camping. But I also abhore owners who do not consider other owners. They should reported to managemend insiting that management act. There are but a few camps thar allow dogs abd such inconsiderate people might cause them to decrease.
And then I am also going to put my foot in. If you are absolutely against dogs in parks just don't go there! There are more than enough camps that cater for your taste..

Rob, do tell us some more of yourself by adding to your profile. No obligation but it is nice to know who we are talking to. Although few of us actually ever see each other, we feel like friends,at least I do.

We had a "Puggy", which passed away at nearly 12- years = 84 years to human age and she was house trained.
She used to travel all the way with us and was never on a lease.
She used to go never 50mt away from the caravan.
Outside, where she made her "mark" for "Drop-Offs", she used to use only that spot.
During at night, we had a caravan step infront of our bed, because of her height and when she had an emergency, she used to scratch or tap your feet, meaning: I have to go.
After she passed away, we had a Boston Terrier, which we trained the same.
Unfortunately she never made it after the Pitbull dog attacked on her and me.
We had a Permie camper with a Boerboel and Police dog and they will do their droppings where-ever they wanted to do so.
They used to enter your privacy without calling them.
After complaints at management, not especially the dogs, but the male owner himself, which walked inside your caravan if as he own it.
I took him on and mentioned that this is our "Private" place, he was then appologised.
My wife mentioned to me: This guy is "Irritating" her, because while she is making food, she mentioned to me that he was standing too close to her during my abcense.
I took him on with words, but it went in by ear left and left by ear right.
a Petition letter was drawn up and majority voters were + about his camping manners.
The owner gave him a letter: If you do not change your camping eticet manners, you must unfortunatly leave the premmises within 1x Calendar month and a week later they left.
I think they still try to get the "Gas Pistol Balls" out of their dog's "Asses".
We had our time as campers as well as permanent.
The time has come and go to say G/By.

Step 2 of our permanent camping:-
After the Puggy passed away and a couple of months, then the Boston Terrier, we decided further on: Nomore Pets.
One day in the Bushveld, I came along the road of 2x Bush Wild Cats.
I started to treat them with "Junk" food and therefore they started to follow me.
We used to gave them food in the mornings and late afternoons, but was never allowed inside the tent etc...
What a pleasure:- They used to sleep underneath our caravan and since we never had problems with snakes and bush rottans.
My apologies, Brian to "Fishtail" your topic, but while pets were under discussion, I think??

My apologies to you Brian.
