My wife and I are retiring and becoming full timers. There are many questions that we would be grateful for any advice on. Here are some of them:

We both have previous camping experience. I used to camp at Midmar Dam and water-ski and over one Christmas and New Year week there was us and one other boat on the entire dam. My wife had a 1977 VW mobile camper van

1] We are in the process of buying a Jurgens Palma. This has been interupted by the lockdown.

2] I have a Merc C200 Kompressor automatic. Is this sufficient to tow the caravan. We intend to stay at a site for a few weeks and the move on to the next site so not very much moving.

3]  We have 2 small children [sorry meant dogs]. We are aware that this will limit us to the sites that we can go to.

4] Are there any special precautions/requirements when camping with dogs?

We would appreciate any comments and advice.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah & Lee Rom

Phone camp sites ahead to book and see if they will take dogs. Some parks advertise they take dogs but only out of season.

Think you are going to find towing a Palma with a C 200 hard work, mercedes are not the most torquey motors. What is the tare and gvm of the Palma?

I think 150 kw and 300nm at 1800rpm is sufficient for a petrol engine, or am I wrong in my reasoning.

I see that the towing capacities of the year models differ from 1250kg up to 1800kg. I have it that the Palma tare is 1080kg and the GVM is 1300kg so you might be on the edge depending on what year model you have.

The first set of figures is the power output and torque for a C200 engine. That will determine with how much ease you will tow.

You need to familiarise yourself with the towing capacity of your vehicle.

i.e.

  • The tow vehicle Tara must be greater than the GVM (loaded mass) of the one on tow (caravan)
  • Make sure your driver licence is sufficient to tow
  • etc.

Look at:

Oppad na die volgende kamp.

i think a bakkie , double cab or club cab, with a canopy  would be a more appropriate vehicle , and i say that cause when full timing you tend to , need to carry around necessary stuff , which may not fit into your car and caravan. make out a list or better still what we did was to put every thing we thought  we would need into one room in the house, then looked at our available space and then looked what was in the room, would never have got of the start line without our double cab.

click on the full timers posts, mine amongst other posts there should be quite informative.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Am I missing something - but there seems to be less and less news from fulltimers - are there less now or are they just sharing less - I know some have gone back to permanent residences.

Slower and lower is better than higher and faster!

we have picked up on that there are plenty of part timers on the route ..... not that many full timers.

Hi to all in lockdown. Hope everyone surviving.

Refering to my first post, decided to sell the Merc.

Questions:

1) SUV or Twin cab

2) Petrol or diesel

3) Make and model

Many thanks

Lee

i would think double cab or club cab, although we are currently looking at changing our double cab for a club cab for the bigger load bin, my personal choice is diesel , lots of low down torque for towing, which vehicle again is down to personal choice, nobody makes a bad vehicle these days, im a mitsubishi man.

I would rather buy a clubcab, extended cab in diesel if I were you. The space of the loadbin is always a winner.

A SUV can also do the job with the other benefit that the individual ride will be softer than a bakkie.

Sê dankie vir wat jy in die lewe het.

I am brand new in the caravan arena, but my wife and I are mountain bikers. So, speaking of loading space, I sold my double cab Isuzu and bought a Tourneo Custom, took all the seats out the back. You wont believe how much loading space it has and it can handle the weight as it is built on the Transit suspension....only downfall, ground clearance. The 2x4 I will try and overcome with choice of road and a winch if needed.

Hoe voel ander permies oor permanente kampering
