I have decided to buy a wood lathe to turn parts for dining room chairs which have been broken by the  grand children a few years back.  Unfortunately Adendorffs is closed at the moment, so my project will have to wait, hopefully for a week, but who knows.  I am also in the process to create a heavy walking stick from a dry Karee branch.  At least for this I have all the necessary equipment.  I am trying to make this last until the 17th.

Fred i was given a lathe by my nephew but just did not have space in my workshop for it and a radial arm saw i got ,so gave it to a friend. Turning is something i only have a little experience with, but it is quite satisfying.

Years ago I built myself a simple lathe to clean the varnished legs of an antique  stinkwood and yellow wood table.  I did the work on our flat's balcony shortly after we got married. .  Funny were not kicked out.  I dismantled it afterwords as I did not have any further use for it at the time. We still have the table.

Neat work on you table by the way.

Thanks Fred, its not the best work i have done but i am getting used to the radial arm saw to cut the tennons. My drill press with the square mortice attachment works well for the mortice cutting. Very satisfying having the right tools for the job and using them for a change and not letting the cobwebs gather. A bad workman blames his tools but then again you need the correct tools to do a job properly.
It also helps to have nice sharp chisels and cutting tools too.

Looks like we have that same strainer system as you. Jan have you piped up your tank to the toilets or all your water? We have a 1000l tank with a flow controller and a pump which switches on when the toilet is flushed only. Did not want the runoff water going to the drinking water as monkeys and birds poo on the roof. We also have switch over valves so when the tank is empty the toilet can run off municipal water. Do not think ours is really a cost saving but it is good to know how much water you save every time you flush, and when it does not rain its surprising how quickly that 1000 l tank is used up.
Did the garage repack and chucked out my study notes and Tec Drawing files from 1977 which i kept all these years in case i did teaching again. Hard to get rid of such things and you have to be ruthless.

Piet im too nervous of using rainwater for kitchen and shower use. We have a lot of monkeys and Hadeedas here in Hillcrest Kzn and they use our roof regularly so poop regularly. Dont think the filter we have is adequate for drinking, would need to boil all water.
Garage clean out is tough. You need to say if something has not been used 5 years chuck out. Even chucked out 2 stretchers and a spider chair as they are never used although still good. Now at least i can park my motor cycle properly at the end of the garage. Have put aside a dome tent with extension i am donating to scouts at end of lockdown. Not used 10 years.

Paul for shower and bathroom we use our tank water. We are not troubled by monkeys or Hadedas on our roof. Just ensure you install one of those long blue filters on the inlet to your house. In times of need we only drink,or cook, with bottled water.

Paul, I had to rush before the shutdown to get the leaf catcher and strainer. Could not get them from any hardware store in Durban and ordered them from Cape Town.

Next step after lockdown is to connect toilets and showers. Bought the tank and pump from a doctor who never used it for R900.00. The pump also switched  on when you open a tap.
