This was originally a fold open caravan. The roof folded open from the body and became the bed and as you open it the tent was pulled over it. So the actual trailer became the living space and the opened roof the more than good enough bed.
Oom Jeep here on the forum has a similar set up, maybe a bit larger. I trust that he will be able to give you more info on how the tent structure and set up works.
This is a great find and if you take your time in restoring it, can become a GEM.
Congrats with the find.
You are going to have a mission with the paper work to get it road worthy but it is worth the effort. Just keep the receipts of everything you buy for the project and used the to register it as a new build or re build.
Even make a list on the components coupled to the prices. This will help a lot with the police clearance and to get a Chassis number.
I am in process of building a multi-load type of trailer. After its done it will be a very light Low-bed, Motor cycle, Inflatable dingy/2 man boat, Luggage and Camping trailer.
It is mainly the low bed and then I fit on top of that either:
The axle and leaf springs are currently in for sand blasting. Its going to take a bit of time as the carport for my caravan at home is now priority.
It looks to me as if the only part you will be able to use, is going to be the chassis. And you will have to make sure this is in 'n good condition. Why not rather get an old caravan in a better condition and rebuild this, or buy a brand new chassis from Al-Ko and start from scratch? I might sound negative, but this looks like a big project being started on a very uncertain basis. Maybe use the old chassis to build a trailer if you don't feel like just dumping it.
Fred share your sentiment, it seems to be , a 99% effort for a 1% reward, its going to be complete labour of love
Voorspoed en Sterkte
I also like taking on projects like this. Also build a home build off road trailer with a proper trailer tent which uses a ladder inside to get to a very big double bed. Still at home, cannot use it because of the wives' back and neck problems up and down the latter. Also build me a half size kitchen unit for my canopy this past weekend. So, I know, it is the satisfaction you get out of it that matters. Good luck and keep us up dated on step by step progress you make.
Thanks guys i will keep you posted
With good planning you will make her brand new with the latest trends and camping gadgets. Enjoy.
I found a new place in Johannesburg called "Blue Hole Trading" phone number 011 395 4306.
They make awnings and tents and also do alterations to existing ones. They say that if you can plan it they can make it.
Maybe use them for my Camping trailer Project.
Lientjie from Blue Hole is fantastic - good work, excellent value and highly recommended.
