Not so long ago, I was the one who said... "Camping... no thank you"

Can you believe that I bought my self a small little vintage caravan... and I am Loving it!

Busy with restoration & fixing the little gem myself....

I dont know where to start and was hoping I could get some history on my little caravan

Got the pappers for it.....but no year or model ...nothing.

I can really use the wisdom and knowledge of the old campers out there please

Regards

M

Welcome to the forum...and hang onto that gem she's beautiful!. None of the "modern" vans were built to the same quality levels than this girl.

Welcome to our family and Forums.

That looks like a 1963 Sprite or perhaps I am wrong...
This beautiful girl comes with a stable door and that was my favourite feature of my Sprite 1964 model I used to own back in the day...  Lovely...

The two images below are 1963 and 1964 models

Well I found this 1958 Sprite photo now as well, but I think yours is is more likely the 1963 model as I originally thought...  Perhaps they made a few small adjustments to this model. Your van has a slightly different shape side panel above your window and your door is slightly rounded at the top compared to the image I have for the 1963 model.

But hey, I was not even born yet...
I only arrived on this planet in 1973...
Let’s hope someone else has more info on this topic for you.

O Gosh... Thank you for the response.

Now you see my dilemma, I dont know if it was a Jurgens or a Sprite or who knows

But I have been googling for 3 weeks none stop

This site does help... I read up on previous chats and found information that can assist.

Tomorrow I will be looking for "my little vintage" stamp on the "disselboom" smile

But yes it's got the door of the 1963 and the shape of 1961 & 1965

Indeed before my time 2.... thats why I love the little Vintage.

Thank you Steamer & Administrator ... you are getting me one step closer on the path to finding its history

Welcome Madeleine. O what good memories. Your van is a Sprite. In 1974 Susan and I bought the later model. I cannot recall its model because we also bought it second hand and that was many moons ago.The lay out was the same but my model was the fibre glass construction. We loved old "Stertjie" and towed it with our 1600cc Cortina bakkie.

From a Jurgens perspective.

Well we can see it is not the 1932 horse drawn caravan, nor the 1952 caravan in the b/w photo.

But the 1965 Jurgens (red image) seems a little closer again, except the Jurgens range as far as I know did not come out in the light blue colour like yours, I could be mistaken, but it was more the maroon/brown colours and this 1965 cartoon image is shown in a reddish colour, so we still not closer at all.

For kicks and giggles, I added the 1938 Jurgens truck and another 1941 horse drawn cart made by Jurgens, if only it was one of those trucks you were restoring.

This is the 1970 Gypsey model.  Perfhaps, Oh no, maybe, Ummm... No.

I have many images of Gypsey, but this is the only one closest to what looks like yours.
We are no closer to the answer for you unfortunately, I am more confused now than before.

Hahahahaha... But it has been fun digging up all these old images.

I watch a video of an old vintage being restored... and behind the inside panel they had the date stamp and model numbers...

If my memory serves me right, the model in question could ne a Sprite Alpine.

The stabiliser bar on the A-frame seems to be an add-on as Jurgens were famous for the stabiliser set-up?? Also 'missing' on the A-frame seems to be the gasbottle holders - think it still functioned on the old larger (9kg?) bottle?

Enjoy the restoration.

The larger model (shown above) was known as the Sprite Musketeer ('must get beer')??

Must get beer sounds about right wink you all need a beer or two after this brain teaser of a little vinatge

My Little vintage had the copper pipes still, gas it was indeed...

The A frame and stabilizer is on steriods... this little caravans A frame is of propper build and material used... the outside of caravan is still steel...

I am getting very exited by all the response and stories of Sterijie and the memories of the Historic campers

Enjoy the long weekend - Happy camping

It is my garden shed!!!

I bought one about %%%@@@ years ago for garden tools. A-frame fell off &&& years ago. Fortunately the garden engineer didn't have to pull it around!!

The gasbottle holders I removed, and made two stands, one with wheels, to use when making potjie at home. Also installed burglar proofing to make sure lawn mower stays put!

About **** years ago I got a very good 3rd! hand PVC cover, which was used to cover sides of transport trailer, and cover top of shed - otherwise it would have been leaking long time ago. Further it was sort of wrapped with shade cloth.

Some of the cupboards/racks that was installed inside now do service in lapa. This model had a curtain about in back 3rd of van, I supposed to seperate main bed.

I will try and load picture later. All I know it WAS some or other Sprite caravan in earlier life!!!

My problem is to demolish it later if it was to be removed from erf!

Madeleine, won't be much to see of the shed, as it's partly covered with shade netting, and I would not dare to open door, as my garden engineer has got the tendency to stack up all the work stuff from the back towards the door, and if I open the door, I ususally get hit by either rake, snake or shovel!!

I will try to take pics of some of the cupboards that was put up in the lapa, about 20 years ago. Then I will TRY and upload the pics here, have not done that in years!

Regards - Frans

More.

Welkom by die forum.

Ek het nou on facebook gesien daar is iemand wat so karavaantjie wil verkoop.

Jaco, ek glo nie daardie man sal enige handboeke hê nie.

Myne by hom gekoop so 25/30 jaar gelede, as 'n "tuin stoortjie" - geen papiere of niks.
