Hello fellow campers,
I need your help please.
I'm devastated. 😭.
After 1 month searching , securing all points with the rental company I proceed to the booking of a 6 sleeper Motorhome and paid for since 2 weeks.
They garantie the vehicle was allowed to Zimbabwe and Zambia but only upon management agreement and surcharge to Botswana.
I therefore took no risk, planned only to go through Zimbabwe.
Purchased the flight tickets for the 5 of us from Mauritius to Johannesburg.
Booked all camping sites and activities, been in communication with Zimbabwe border.
And today the rental company announced that they changed their policy and no longer allow their Motorhome to cross borders. Bad luck for my consequences !!
I'm looking for solutions
What would you suggest?
Maybe you know of a private owner that would rent his Motorhome?
Our holidays are planned from the 3rd to 23th August 2022.
Thanks a million for your input.
Geraldine, I am astounded about your experience so far. I thought I could obtain some information from Botswana Tourism about any rules applicable to motorhomes in Botswana. This was shortly after your initial posting. No surprise but I have not received any response.
We had an experience with Botswana Parks in May this year after a booking made in June 2021 turned sour as the booked campsite in Kgalagadi had suffered fire damage in September 2021 and which we were unaware of. They immediately told us in May 2022 when we were there to occupy the site that there are no refunds. My email about this issue, not asking for refunds but just some explanation, has not been answered.
Have you tried Bobo Campers, Maui, or Wicked Campers. The latter indicates they travel in Africa.
My kids have just enjoyed a great 10 day holiday at Club Med (La Pointe aux Cannoniers ?).
Thank you for reverting Butts.
the rental company (one the ones you've listed) came back to me with apologies and agreement to let me take the motorhome to Zimbabwe. Hopefully, I won't cross more bugs :-)
for my understanding, it is not a question of regulation, but more of a company policy.... I guess it is an expensive vehicle and to get it repaired or replaced once so far away it is a pain..
Cross fingers we won't be the ones proving this policy right !!!
Planning this camping road trip is a real challenge. A full time job that will hopefully be worth the holidays.
Happy to hear your kids enjoyed their stay in Mauritius.
If it eventually proves impossible to visit neighboring countries, you can consider just holidaying in South Africa as you apparently already bought the tickets to get here. I am not sure whether you know our country, but there certainly is much to do and see here. If you do take this course, ask advice on where to go on this Forum. I am sure you will get plenty useful information.
Try www.britz.co.za .....on map you can see the areas which are allowed
You can also try www.kampi.co za ....its a rental company that has not got their own fleed, but connects clients with private owners that wants to rent out their own caravans and motorhomes
Great thank you for the recommendation.
Their landing page states "...We strongly recommend at this time you do not cross borders with our vehicles until further notice"
So I would first get confirmation from them that you are able to go to the destinations you have envisaged.
