I'm driving a 2001 BMW 525i and I believe the car's weight is 1700kg and I understand that I cannot tow a caravan weighing more than that. I want to buy a Wilk Amethyst(2 door) which has a GVM of 1400kg, but what I don't know is whether my car will have enough power to pull the caravan. Caravans like the Exclusive, for example, requires the tow vehicle to be a minimum of 2.8. Even though mine is a 2.5, the kW is the same as, for instance, the BMW 528i. How will I know if my car is suitable for such a big caravan?

Hi Velde, I take is that the van is secondhand, so my suggestion would be to ask the seller/dealer if you can hook it and take it for a testdrive. Remember to load a couple of kilos to make the van roughly the same weight as when you are going to use it. Also remember to take a trip where there is plenty of ups and downs on the way. Depending on where the van is, maybe take the N14 between Krugersdorp and Pretoria or even the N1 between Grassmere tolgate and Roodepoort. The second way has got long uphills and I believe is a real tester. I do not know about your car's torque, but the minimum requirement figure is only an indication, and not by law the minimum required. Robert Marais

Velde, My two pennies worth. The engine capacity or kilowatt is not the issue when it comes to towing. Torque is the name of the game, and the higher the revolutions required to get a reasonable torque output the worse suited for towing. We recently met up with a guy who changed his 2 litre diesel BMW for a 2.5 petrol model. He said the 2 litre diesel was far superior with the caravan behind. I have a suspicion that the petrol driven BMW is more of a race horse thriving on revs, whereas the diesel version is more of a mule, thriving on torque. On the other hand, Wille (the Star Rating Assessor featured on this forum from time to time) is the one caravanner who probably tows more caravan kilometers per year than any other person in the country. He tows with a 2.5 petrol engined BMW, and seems to be quite happy with the combination. (He tows the van with the logos and adverts painted on featured in photos having to do with CaravanParks.com.)
