I've just done the grading there. Will not appeal to everybody - wonderful bush experience. I will not recommend it for caravanners - rather take your tent and/or bushtrailer or bushcaravan.
The friendly people at the main gate recommended a 21 km terribly corrugated route to the camp site - took me 90 minutes with my Penta - towing sometimes at 10km/hour. There is a longer route via Pontdrif - 32 km tarred and the last 8km dirt road (which is also corrugated in some places).
Mapungubwe is not a consilidated park - looks like a crude jig-saw puzzle on a map). Mazhou is situated on a small piece further West from the main entrance - you can do self-drive game-viewing and there is a nice hide at a waterhole. Saw elephant, impala, giraffe etc. At night heard jackal and hyena. Also in this section an upmarket tented camp provides fixed accommodation.
You have to drive back 26 km (5km tarred en then the dreaded 21 km) or 40 km (32 plus 8 km) to enter the main park at the main entrance. Game is sparce here by you can visit the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site (at a fee) and of course experience the 400m tree-top walk up to a hide overlooking the Limpopo River. A few km to the West a series of lookout points (views into Zimbabwe and Botswana) have been built - wonderful and a must-see. A luxury chalet restcamp, Leokwe is situated in this part of Mapungubwe.
