I hope someone can help. About a year ago I met a keen birder, like myself, in the Blouberg Nature Reserve. He showed me a book that identifies plants by their flower color. The book is divided up, indexed, into plants with similar flower color like white, blue, purple, yellow, orange etc. The right hand edge of the book shows the flower color sections. When you find a wild flower the color on the side of the book is then matched to the color of the flower. The relevant color indexed section of the book is then paged through to visually identify the particular flower and thus the plant it belongs to. It literally takes minutes to positively identify plant species.

I unfortunately did not note the particulars of the book nor the contact details of the owner.

Groete,
Paul

Hello Paul,

Sounds like a great book to have in your car or Caravan library. Please post the details when you find them.

I think the time is fast approaching when you'll leave your books at home and take along a tablet with all your species I D data on  flowers ,Grasses, Trees,Birds, reptiles, Snakes...... Fruits, Rock formations etc, etc.

Paul, kontak BRIZA se boekwinkel in Soutpansbergweg, Riviera.

Hoop jy vind jou boek

Groete

Paul, I think I have this book, but it is at our other home at the moment. I tend to remember it is about plants of the Witwatersrand.  Does it sound right?

I wonder, do you know about the app for cell phones known as PLANTSNAP?  This is quite handy.  You have to be on internet when you use it and you need to be able to photograph the plant's flowers.  Then you ask it to identify the plant.  Mostly it comes up with the correct identification the first try, but if you are not convinced, you get it to try again and again until the correct plant comes up.  Obviously you then need another source to tell you more about the plant.

Thanks Theo, I will try BRIZA. Fred the book was for the whole of Southern Africa and was A4.

i have heard of the phone apps and will try them. I also prefer the apps as they are less comber some and quicker to use. I use Roberts Multimedia & Stuart’s Mammals. I will look at plantsnap.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Groete,
Paul

Dankie Leon, sal kyk as ek daar n' draai moet maak.

Paul

Hoop jy kom reg
