Despite fitting new "shocks" on my roof, it still remains a challenge for my wife to assist in raising the roof of the caravan.
Any advice or suggestions please?

Compare the spec of the shocks you have with other similar caravans.  I also have a feeling that the ones you are using is not jacked up to the correct power.

I have the same problem on the Penta. Asked the dealership today to look at the shocks to make sure it operates correctly.
The workshop manager said that best is to open one side at a time.
This is how I have been doing it since swambo finds it impossible to lift her side of the roof.
What concerns me is as one ages, it is going to become more difficult even to lift one side at a time.

Thank you for the suggestions to date.

Same wife :) - just not as tough any more...

Shocks appear to be correct! I think I'll attempt the "one-side at a time" option.

Hopefully some more practical suggestions to save Swambo!

It becomes more difficult for someone to lift something above their head the closer they get to their maximum reach. So that 10cm height disadvantage that swambo has makes it more difficult for her. Get her a stepladder or box to stand on. I wonder if it is possible to convert your roof to be like the new Jurgens range,i.e the shocks are very strong, so strong in fact that they lift the roof automatically and you have to pull it DOWN with special straps to stow it. To lift it you just let the straps go.

This is a design feature from Jurgens. The roof is designed to force you to buy a classique or exclusive when you get older.

You can take the lifting shocjs to Bosch in Pretoria West and they can increase the gas pressure, which wiil increase the lifting power. I have done this successfully for a number of applications

Chris
I suspected this as part of a sales strategy. They probably already have an idea in which year they can record a sale of a Claasique or Exclusive against my name.

Marius
Thanks.

I have a little arthritis in my shoulders, with the result that lifting my hands above my head is an unpleasant exercise. I had to find a way of lifting the roof without raising my hands. I found a very simple method - so simple one cannot believe how easy it is.

I place my walking stick's bottom on the handle in the roof, bend my knees, take the walking stick by its knob and straighten my legs. Up goes the roof, one side at a time. Swambo assists by pushing the stays back so the roof does not come down when I let go.

I was thinking of making something akin to a spade out of plywood, but the walking stick does the job well enough, and always travels with.

It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old – one is old because one stopped playing.

Surely if you get an electric lifting rooftop tent, some bright person can design an electric or mechanical aid to lift a caravan roof?
Maybe it exists already without us knowing about it.
We have caravan movers as an aid, why not roof lifters?
Is the SA caravan industry so conservative (an earlier threat on this forum) that it cannot think outside its own old box?
Surely if it is marketed as an add-on like the movers, caravanners will buy it, especially with this being the next physically demanding portion of setting up your caravan.
Any takers out there?

Real question is, will you pay R15, 000 for a device that raises your roof at the touch of a button?

I paid nearly R29,000 for movers to be able to move the van into position.
This was fitted for 'one day' when I cannot push it around by myself anymore. Using it makes one realise it actually makes life very easy and becomes an essentiaml.
If one gets older and camping is in the blood, with physical strength eventually becoming an issue or some form of restriction eg. as with Pieter (Kanneman), then paying for this facility will be like it was with movers.
Movers started off as an exception reserved for the guys with money, to where it is now widely used and fitted. A caravan without movers, amongst the older vanners, has become an exception.

So, yes, if I have difficulty to lift the roof to the extent of possible injury or avoiding pain, then paying for it will be an obvious option.

As with movers, one will very quickly have cheaper options on the market.

I have often thought about physical inability that comes with old age. When the time comes where I must ask resort staff to un-hitch my van and to set up my camp I think then the time has arrived for me to give the van to the kids and to start using chalets and the likes.

In any event, when you reach the stage where you simply cannot trust a single fart, then the camping game is over.

It is not how old one is that matters, it is how one is old that matters. One do not stop playing because one is old – one is old because one stopped playing.

I will make a plan to camp and be self sufficient until fart trusting becomes a problem.
By then there may be a device to discern the type of fart beforehand. Electric or otherwise.
Trust it will not be a shocking experience.
Might be too expensive for me by then. Will still make a plan to be able to continue camping.

I realise "movers" are not the topic. Just as a matter of interest - what is the cost of this option?

Johan,
That is the price range for manually engaging movers.
Mechanically engaging movers you add another R20k.
I priced it when I bought the Penta February 2017.
So probably more expensive by now.

My easy to make gadget would be to use 2x800mm planks with a hinge between them. Check actual length before screwing in the bottom rubber feet. PVC pipe or any half round piece screwed to the one plank at the top to go into the top handle. Or a piece of carpet in a 25mm half round aluminium pipe. Rubber feet at the bottom to prevent slipping on the caravan floor.

Start with the planks in the right hand position and one person presses just above the hinge. Hold until the second person can lock the roof bracket. This works very well but is not high tech. For less than R1000 one could use a different method and have it working electrical.

My thinking is that that with the walking stick method one's knees simply replaces the hinges you refer to. Much less paraphernalia to clutter the van.

Pieter you are right. The 1st time I thought out this simple bracket was for someone who had a back operation and cannot lift much more than 5kg. This method puts less strain on the back and only some power with the arms. It has the same leverage affect as your knees.

Hi daar

My maatskappy Linear Actuators SA doen elektriese linear actuators.

Kontakt my gerus vir enige verdere inligting.
