I received an email from Leentjiesklip advising that they are opening on 1st September. They also gave their new rates which I have taken a screenshot of and attached. Hopefully you can read it.

Basically their rates have more or less doubled. Site with private ablution is R750 in season and R550 out of season. The cheapest out of season site is R350 per night. There is still a Pensioners discount of 20% out of season.

In the past there have been reported security problems there but we have never experienced any as we put anything that is valuable away at night or when leaving the site unattended.

It will be interesting to see how well supported they will be. We only go during the week and it has always been pretty empty then.

Being a municipal resort with lawn covering typical to be expected some 50 meters from the ocean and ancient facilities in desperate need of upgrading I think they will further deteriorate because of lack of income.

Fortunately we have discovered a much nicer resort a little further up the coast.

When we were at Leentjiesklip in Sept 2017, they were busy with major upgrades at the central ablution block.

Someone been there recently that can give an update on this?

Pieter, are you prepared to share the name and location of the much nicer resort up the coast?

Ek neem byvoorbeeld myself......ek gaan nie by n oord kamp net omdat dit goedkoop is nie.....as oord niks vir my bied of aantreklik lyk nie, voel dit ek gaan net my tyd mors ongeag die tarief. Daar is oorde waar ek nie eers gratis sal wil kamp nie......

WAARSKUWING:

Kampeer is aansteeklik en verslawend 😁

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is nice.

We prefer the Dwarskersbos resort to any other in the vicinity.

gehalte "is ?

As dit soos die onderstaande lyk en 'n paar keer per dag skoon gemaak word is ek meer as teverede daarmee teen Dwarskersbos se prys.

There were always going to be resorts who would raise tariffs outrageously to recoup lost profits. I mentioned this in the Waar kamp ek? thread a few months back. Those campers who are prepared to cough up the moolah will do so. Good luck to them. Include me out. My options will still be open for those parks who have taken into consideration their loyal local customers on a modest income and stuck with the customary annual 10% cost of living increase and midweek and pensioners' concessions. We have all taken a knock. Some folk are working on 75% of their previous salaries, some half and some even 30%. They will never be reimbursed for their lost remuneration and some poor souls will never get their jobs back. It is up to the resort to determine their business model and which route to take as far as their fees go. Free market and supply and demand and all that. Personally I will just narrow the choice of my favourites and make my decision accordingly. Peter Stuyvesant is still R38,50 for 20s and R60 for 30s, the same price as in February. Go figure...

Quite right Harv, you can only do what you can afford.  I have had no increase on my pension this year so expenses have to be well managed. I do not blame resorts that try and recoup their losses as they probably are far in the red after several months of no income, but they will have to tread carefully between what they need and what campers can afford and are willing to pay.  We should not see camp owners are fat cats with stacks of ready money in the banks to cover all unexpected expenses, and milking us of our hard earned incomes.  I think most of them, even the big resorts like Forever and ATKV, probably  have difficulties staying solvent. I do believe careful shopping will however still turn up affordable out of season, midweek rates for pensioners.  This is what we do since going on pension, with the off week-end maybe thrown in now and again.

My question is, why only 10, 15 or 20% discount for midweek pensioners - why not 50% ?

Is there an algorithm that indicates at what discount rate one will fill a resort to the maximum during midweek?

My logic tells me that a 40% occupancy at 50% discount is far more feasible than a 15% occupancy at 15% discount. The 50% discount should in this scenario yield 36% more.

Since geysers and staff expenses are much of a much irrespective of the percentage occupancy, I would rather encourage pensioners to support a 50% discount proposition and in doing so operate a more profitable resort. Or am I missing something?

Bearing in mind that resorts are only allowed 50% of capacity under present regulations, week end occupancy is in any event not going to exceed 50%, so why not try and raise midweek occupancy?

Spot on Fred. Kanneman: good point. This would certainly increase the midweek occupancy by those not bound by work commitments and 50% discount  for 50% capacity is surely more profitable than 10% off for  around 10% occupancy. These figures are just a mathematical example and reasonably unrealistic, but the trick would be finding the sweet spot that would maximise the benefit to midweek camper and profit margin for the business owner. In other words there certainly is wiggle room to make an adjustment accordingly.cool

Same with Hermanus, Melkbos, Yzerfontein, etc. I only consider going to Ou Skip for a quick weekend away as the petrol factor is not much of an issue from the peninsula.  But the development definitely has had an impact on the vibe and experience from what it was 20-30 years back. Ons raak oud, mense! The younger generation has to travel that much further just to escape the urban sprawl.
