I say, a winch without an anchor is like having shoes without feet. Over the years, I've often cursed not having one, then I got one for my previous 4x4, a Daihatsu rocky SE. But that was a cruiser-weight 4x4, the Landy's a whole different kettle of fish, and weighs in as a heavy-weight 4x4, right up there with the Gelandewagen, Toy cruiser and Pajero.

So with this in mind, for a long time now I've been throwing around a number of ideas to make a winch anchor and finally got going on this.

Different sand anchors for different applications, but the one I most need is for soft surface such as sand / mud / clay ETC

The sand anchor is the last piece of gear I need. So I've decided to modify my previous 4x4's anchor (by increasing the plough size) by a factor of 3 plus a bit to cope with the Landy.

Unfortunately, back then I was an idiot and did a bloody stupid thing, I cut a piece of the blade out to make it fit, so now I have to re-construct the bit I cut away as well.

While it's not a self setting anchor, it used to self dig / bury, but with the mods that may no longer be the case... Hopefully it will still self bury, then I will be happy...I'm hoping for around 2000Kg hold when it buries, then with wheel assist augmenting the pull from the winch I'll definately get out of the dwang

When finished, I'll first do trials then if those work, I'll have to figure out where to store / mount it. I don't want to put it inside the Landy... Like to have it on the outside at the front where all my other winch tackle is.

It weighs 6.54Kg, is 500mm across the top of the blades and made from 6mm thick plate.

Here are pics of the mod so far...

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....

Warren it looks like it wil work.  Have you made some extra ribs at the back to prvent the Spade part to fold over specially where the welding is.

There is a boat ancor on the market as Dick suggested and that folds realy flat.

If I remember correctly the boat anchor provides two surfaces that will act as esistance in the sand.

Herman Ja, die "rubber strips" tiepe. If I rate them I would give then a 6+ out of 10. They work on the principal of spreading the load rather than providing traction.

Downside they are heavy, & bulky. Up side is they are cheap.

I've added 3 photo's of all my traction recovery kit. It might ;ook like overkill, but remember I'm solo

Leon, Yes it's called "dansforth anchor". Unfortunately it's not man enough for the task (See photo 1) The draw-bar just collapses and the additional plates just bent backwards.

First, the thing woulden't self bury, I had to dig a trench first. The photo shows the point at which there was initial tension on the winch cable, It's relying only on the resistance of the ground and not digging in to create ever increasing resistance. When I applied additional tension the draw-bar bent upwards, and the additional "wings" bent back

By the time you have an anchor strong enough it's impractically large

(It's a long story, so if you want let me have yr mail I'll  post why) But the principal of a boat anchor is considerably different to that of a ground anchor.

@ Realist... Yes, to a degree. The original ground anchor worked with my previous cruiser-weight 4x4 and self buried. I still have to do trials after modifying it. I'm still re-constituting the bit I cut out. (see my opening post)

Seems like the best anchor creator you have will be your spade.

Enjoy the digging. (That is if you get stuck)
