Hi All

I was going to stay at national parks on my whole one month tour - but after seeing some of your reviews I have changed some of my stays. So, my itinerary is now:

13 Nov - Home in Langebaan

14/15 Oct - Betty's Bay with family (sleeping in the van)

16 Oct - Pine Lake Marina, Sedgefield (one night in a chalet, van parked next to security)

17/21 Oct - Bedford with friends (sleeping in the van) - hoping the Bedford Garden Festival is OK

22 Oct - Aldam Holiday Resort, Ventersburg

23/27 Oct - Skukuza, Kruger NP

28 Oct/1 Nov - Satara, Kruger NP

2/6 Nov - Letaba, Kruger NP

7/8 Nov - Bontle Rest Camp, Marakele NP

9 Nov - Klipspruit River Resort, Leeudoringstad

10 Nov - Gariep A Forever Resort

11/12 Nov - Karoo Rest Camp, Karoo NP

13 Nov - Home in Langebaan

Lots of driving between stays, but looking forward to the trip

Sean

The NP resorts that I cancelled, after reading reviews, were Highlands and Mokala

Mokala is actually a fantastic park. I've stayed there many times, but not at the Motswedi campsite. I used to work at the silos at Modderrivier (nearby) and always stayed in a chalet in Mosu Lodge (the main camp). Motswedi offers private bathrooms, but I've experienced the gravel road to Mokala's main gate (21 km from the N12) sometimes in terrible condition and a high damage risk for a conventional road caravan. For an off-road van no problem.

And Golden Gate Highlands Park is also a great park (wonderful scenery), but I will feel very unsafe to camp there.

Your itinerary looks interesting.

Dis nou n lekker trippie.

Voel net vir my die afstande kan dalk lank wees tussen party plekke.

Soos van Ventersburg na Skukuza.

Maar gaan geniet dit.

Veilig sleep.

Sounds great. I would, however, sleep over one night between Ventersburg and Skukuza. The passes to the Lowveld are challenging. When entering the KNP, you will be dead tired and not even feel like looking for game.  Remember, you are on holiday!

We were originally going to make this trip in a tent (pulling a trailer which would have been quicker), but my wife persuaded me to take the van instead! So, will take me longer between stays.

I will just rest up when we get to Skukuza, and go out first thing the next morning. After all we have 5 nights at each camp in Kruger

I have asked Aldam to move our reservation to a day earlier to facilitate an additional stop.

Any recommendations on where to stay?

If you are entering at Phabeni Gate, I would sleep one night at Pienaardam, Middelburg. About 5 h from Ventersburg (Gillooly's always takes time and patience). From there it's about 4 h to Skukuza.  Pienaardam Resort turnoff is next to the highway.

Have a great trip.

I would also suggest Pienaar dam in Middelburg.  Danie stayed there a week or two back so he can give feedback on the resort.

Although towing my van, we slept in a chalet at Pienaardam in 2015 on our way to Skukuza. Firstly, the chalet was nothing to write home about. And secondly, I walked around in the camping area and had a look at the ablution facilities. I felt glad I did not stay over in my van. I attach my comments when I rated the resort:

Access road is not too bad. Although I towed my caravan, we opted to stay over for the one night in one of the chalets. But I was glad we did not camp as I walked around in the resort and found a few things that I reckon not to be on standard. The sites are all on a slope, the ablutions were not bad, but also nothing to write home about. I will not consider Pienaardam as a camping spot, but I doubt whether I will even stay in one of their chalets again.

If you need to sleep over somewhere in that area, I will much rather recommend to travel further on the N1 to Pretoria and take the N4 from there. Or even go via Bapsfontein and stay over at Kaia Manzi near Bronkhorstspruit. In my opinion a much better call. We stayed there for one night on our way back from Lower Sabie in 2016. I attach my rating comments for Kaia Manzi too:

We used Kaia Manzi as an overnight stop en route between Kruger and the Boland - on one of the coldest recorded June days in Gauteng. The entrance road from the R25 to the resort was in good condition. We experienced a friendly reception and had a very nice lawned site near to the ablution block that was open. The ablutions were very neat and comfortable - until I used the urinal in the "Gents". Somehow the flushing mechanism got stuck and the water kept running. The urinal must also have been slightly blocked as it could not take the water away. I reported it to Reception, who undertook to refer it to the relevant person. But no attention was given to the problem until the next morning - by that time the floor of the "Gents" was totally under water. Fortunately we were the only people in the camp - thus I could use the "Ladies" together with my wife. But except for the mentioned problem, Kaia Manzi is a neat resort and we will surely use it again in future. In my opinion it is actually quite expensive @ R310/night for pensioners, out of season and mid-week.

Sean, you will not have the above issues at Badplaas. And enjoy a relaxing swim in the spa after a long drive.

You can then enter Kruger at Malelane via Barberton.

Well, we are back home already!
We made it to the Bedford Flower Festival when my wife took ill and we had to return. After two days in hospital she is back home again.
I had to cancel all the caravan park bookings (unfortunately too short notice to get any refunds). However, Trudi Kotze at Kruger Lowveld, Cape Town (at the Coloseum Hotel in Century City) moved our National Park bookings to next year saving us our money!
The only caravan sites we did stay at were Gariep A Forever Resort (where we booked a Luxury Site for R345 pn with a pensioner discount) and Ou Skip in Melkbos for just over 2 days (R275 pp/pn with a 20% discount for a 2 day booking) while my wife was in hospital).
Now I have to plan it all again (next time planning stops a maximum of 400 km apart on the journey up and down, staying at each stop for 2 nights; with 4 x 5 day stops in Kruger)!

Hope your wife is OK Nacraza.

Chris I absodoodly agree with you about Mokala. The road there is NOT for caravan and we only go there with the 4x4 bush wagon.

But we LOVE the place. Nicd to hsvd your own facilities and the stars at night are the best apart from Sutherland.

You'll never never know if you never never go

Sorry to hear that you had to cancel the rest of this trip.  At least you did not loose all your booking funds/costs.  Great that you could move them.

All the best recovery for your wife.
