We don’t have an aircon in our caravan, so I have been looking at chalet prices in case we can’t travel there before about end September when it starts getting too hot for my liking if camping.

They seem to start at about R1400,00 per night for a fairly basic chalet without kitchen and peak at about R2400,00 per night ( all two persons) for a more luxurious chalet on the river at Skukuza. That is about the general range.

So if you are wanting to go for ten days you are in for at least R15k! Even if you are well heeled, how many of us can afford it.

Yet if I go in my caravan outside of discount time the cost is around R380,00 per night - less than R4k for ten nights. And then I have the luxury of my own clean bed, decent cutlery (nice sharp knives) and crockery, my own cooking utensils etc etc.

It seems to me to bean no- brainer . Camping in KNP, even if you go out of discount time, is still reasonably affordable, while chalets are prohibitively expensive.

WAARSKUWING:

Kampeer is aansteeklik en verslawend 😁

For the price of a chalet for ten days you can have an aircon fitted, pay for the campsite and still have change.

Good point. Snag is I need the space I have in the Tourer. No space for aircon unless I mount it on the back - don’t like that.

When we visit Kruger for shorter visits, we normally stay in chalets/rondavels. For example, we were booked in the park for 9 nights during past May - and it is now postponed to November. Both periods being in the discount period for pensioners.

Yes, it is obviously considerably more expensive than camping, but otherwise I will have to throw in the tent and other camping gear for such a short visit which I combine with visits to customers in the north. We've done the tent camping on three occasions in the past, but then we stay at one camp only. And at my age I find the tent camping a bit of a schlep.

November we will be spending 3 nights each in Mopani, Shingwedzi and Bateleur. In Mopani we will stay in  4 bed unit (with a view) @ R1 369 per night - getting 40% discount for one night only. Satara (3-bed unit) will cost us R726 per night (getting 40% discount on all three nights) and Bateleur R1 863 per night. Yes, Bateleur is rather expensive (in spite of a 40% discount for two of the three nights), but it will be a first-time for us in this bushveld camp. I only have experience of two of the bushveld camps (Shimuwini & Talamati), but I love the tranquility of these smaller camps. My average cost per night will be about R1 333 - making it much more than camping. But for me personally, there's a time for camping and a time for staying in other accommodation.

Thus - there are times that staying in fixed accommodation in Kruger fits me, but in general I am a camper. I am already booked from 3 to 31 May (29 nights) camping at a total cost of R8 227 - boiling down to R283 per night. Quite a big difference.
