A very good friend of ours from England wants to spoil us with a trip of a lifetime & loves the bush, so we've suggested a Kgalagadi trip.

This has been on our bucket list for years, so maybe now's the time. (Next year around August, so we had better book soonest)

I am looking for some advice on where to stay etc.

We will be staying in chalets and are not fussy about the facilities etc.

My plan so far is to spend about 9-10 nights in the park, excluding stop-overs on the way there & back so I'm thinking:-

1st night at Twee Rivieren, and 3 each at Nossob, Bitterpan, and Mata Mata or the tented camp, then 1 at Twee Rivieren on the way out.

We will hire a 4X4 double cab for our friends and we have the cruiser, so we can do the Bitterpan route.

Any comments from you Kgalagadi regulars?

That's great John.

Bitterpan is an acceptable camp but I would not spend 3 nights there. It is in the middle of the dunes with one way routes to and from.

The bush camps (Urikaruus, Kieliekrankie, Grootkolk) are probably booked up, they would be my first choices for a few nights. The tented camp is good and similar location to Mata Mata.

I agree with 1 night each at TR on entry and exit.

I have just had a look at availability during August 2021.....there are almost no chalets available.

I would suggest book what is available then check for cancellations along the way.

Thanks for the prompt replies guys.

We're not tied to August, so I'll get hold of Sanparks and work it from there.

Richard, thanks for the Bitterpan input. Maybe 1 night there and as you suggest, a couple at any of the others on the way out from Mata Mata.

But Generally, do you think tat my plan is a fair one for the timespan?

Yes John. All camps in KTP are a great place to be. Nossob offers North or South options, Mata Mata offers South with a couple of loops... Spending close to equal time on each 'river' is probably reasonable. So 1TR, 4N,1BP,4MM or KTC,1TR....

TR offers up either route

As it is your first visit, spreading out and staying at as many camps as you can is useful for future visits..... Once bitten.....

John, agree with above. You can also try the camps on the Botswana side, like Rooiputs. The wilderness camps (Urikaruus, Kieliektankie & Kalahari Tented Camp) are gems!

Our favorite is Urikarus, Grootkolk and Gharagab. 1 night each is good. April or August is the best time of year for us.

Heard back from reservations. "Kgalagadi fully booked July to October"

So, today I'm going to try for Karoo National Park, then Addo for a few nights.

Can anyone recommend a night stop-over between Benoni and Beaufort West?

Sorry John....but online availability shows a couple of nights here and there for July.

Reservations for October are not yet open, only open at offices on 2nd November and online on 3rd November.

Enroute Mokala National Park...have you been there yet? Via Kimberely.

Otherwise via Bloem you have Gariep, B&Bs at Colesberg.

After Karoo, Addo and Mountain Zebra.

John, there are always cancelations/changes. Just keep trying and you should come right.

I have always managed to get the camps I wanted by daily looking at availability.

Enjoy your trip.

Paul

Two nights as Bitterpan is sufficient. Three at Nossob also enough.

BUT, I am afraid that you will not be staying there during the next 12 to 18 months. I have been trying for six months now and .... no luck.

Wat van Kruger as jy nie elders regkom nie.

Noordelike kampe is mos meer in die bos as suid.

Dankie for all the inligting mense, but we managed to book at Karoo Nat. Park. 2 nights in the main camp and 2 at the Mbizweni cottage then 3 nights Addo main camp.

We will be in central Kruger in May, so I think again in August is a bit soon.

Maybe I should start looking for Kgalagadi just for the 2 of us for 2022, God willing that we still fine and are still allowed to do that kind of thing by then!
