We are due to go to the KNP for three weeks from the latter part of April/early May - Punda, Shingwedzi and Balule.  I suspect that the usual bunch of foreign tourists won’t be there. Interestingly though, according to the Sanparks website, the camps where we will be staying  are all full. There does not seem to have been a spate of cancellations.

We are booked from 28 May to 2 June at Shingwedsi. KNP did send a notification this last week or so that Kruger is staying open.

Hi Louvan. I wouldn’t trust SanParks’ booking info. We were camping in Skukuza at the end of February. My wife and I decided to stay an extra night, so we went to reception to pay. The lady there immediately said “camping is fully booked”. I said she must be joking, because we had been camping, and it wasn’t even 25% full. Then she checked, and of course there was lots of camping space. But it makes one wonder what goes on, and why they say stuff that’s simply wrong. Maybe they try to push people to spend more money and use a rondawel? I don’t know, but it’s very irritating...

I hope you’re right. Far prefer it when the camps are empty. Particularly now with the virus.

My take on this is that with very few overseas visitors reaching our shores ,its going to effect the KNP  dramatically in terms if income..Not only accommodation in the park but also outside and I assume the new hotel at Skukuza and our famous love and hate safari vehicles.I was told that each occupant pays up to R5000.00 or $288 .00 each, portion going to Sanparks. Not a lot of money in dollars.

The camping sites in terms of income are small ,I just hope Sanparks finds a solution as it will effect all of us.

The only route Sanparks can take ,(as Gov. has no money_) is to reduce expenses and or increase fees.

Well with the highly paid sanparks executives I am sure they will find a solution (sic)

Heard on the radio yesterday that overseas visitors on several incoming flights have been returned without disembarking. Only SA citizens were allowed to disembark.

The tourist industry which is big in SA is definitely going to suffer badly.

Dit is daardie stille, onopmerklike twee weke wat my pla.

Be who you are and say how you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

Hi Pieter I agree some of the public are not taking it seriously.

Just watched on Sky news the ICU situation in Northern Italy. Its frightening the  lung machines simply try and keep you alive ,they rotate your body every couple of hours and you slowly suffocate to death. There is nothing more they can do .600 deaths in 24 hours

In the program shown out of 6 patients in ICU 1 survived.

I am having serious ,2nd thoughts about my visit to the park.

If you feel unwell at one of the camps in the northern part what are you going to do ??

At they moment we are self quarantining ourselves after our return from AUS and NZ

The Happy Campers.

Bly 29 & 30 Maart in Mokala Nas Park oor.

My bespreking vanaf einde April in Kruger bly dus voorlopig eers staan.

Dink so daar aan. Daag nie op by hul werke.

Daarom hou ek my Kruger Wildtuin-bespreking inplek en sal later in Aprilmaand besluit of ek wel Wildtuin toe in Meimaand sal gaan.

On further reflection we have decided to cancel our booking while we can still get a full credit. Considering the rate at which the virus is spreading I don’t want to, a month from now, get sick while in the KNP and then have to break camp and undertake a two day drive home. The downside is just too big. Liewer bang Jan as dooie Jan

I am booked into the park starting the 10 May ,so with the 30day full refund notice ,I have to advise them by either the 9or 10 of April ??Not sure how they count the days.

Furthermore they have the right to change the rules as they seem fit ,which is a possibility for the lock down?

Not sure how they are going to handle the Easter  weekend with" no one" arriving ??? That also applies to all other caravan parks.

I am still struggling with a final decision ,as we are age wise very close to giving up caravanning .

Still struggling to get my over payment back ,unbelievable,no one cares in that finance office at Groenkloof.

Harry, why don't you leave your booking as is and go and enjoy Kruger as from 10 May  as the lock down hopefully ends on 16 April ?  That is what I am going to do and I see Chris Boucher is doing the same.  Should the lock down be extended, I am sure you will not be penalized.

Hi Lennie and Chris after lots of discussions with my wife and our age and health we have decided to cancel .However we will leave the credit with SANPARKS and re book as appropriate .

Notice freeing up of sites at a rapid rate even at L Sabie.

Although I did meet Chris ,hope fully Lennie we will still meet someday.

Harry - yes there's a strong possibility (I think) that I, and probably Len too, will have to cancel/postphone our present reservations. I cannot help to be doubtful whether the 'lockdown' will only lasts for three weeks. Let's hope I am wrong. But I'll wait till the very last before I cancel/postphone.

Hi Chris even after the lockdown ,the feeling in the camps will still not be normal as the virus is only delayed but not defeated .You will have to distance your neighbour both at the caravan and ablution and/or walk with a mask on etc. If someone comes towards you what will you do ?

After all, the camping part and meeting people is part of the Kruger park experience.

I have made my decision lets wait and hope things will improve. +700 cases at this time.

Like you've done last year in Tsendze when you came to say 'hello'.

Obviously you've got a point. But I will still wait.

My reservation for May this year is in chalets/rondavels. (Shingwedzi, Mopani & Satara - 3 nights each). If in any doubt, I will just move the reservation till later when it sound safer.

I was obliged to cancel my Mokala reservation for this coming Sunday & Monday nights because of the 'lockdown' and changed it to a caravan site in Karoo Nat Park during October.

For the cost of two nights in Mosu Lodge in Mokala, I could get 7 nights camping in Karoo. I added another 2 nights for a total of 9 nights (2 - 11 October). If the bug still seems to be present by that time, I will change again.

I managed to phone and postpone our April bookings at Mapungubwe and 3 camps in Kruger till September, when hopefully this plague will be over.

The only problem is that Shingwedzi was full, but we got a spot at Letaba. (Which we prefer anyway)

I must say that Irene in reservations was extremely polite and helpful.
