Good Day All
My wife and I are brand new to the caravan community, about to retire and we are buying a Jurgens Exclusive to tour SA for a year before settling. We will also be buying a 2nd hand bakkie to tow with and have been trying to learn as much as possible but we need advice from seasoned caravanners - what is a good tow bakkie for an Exclusive - I also see that theres this whole Tare issue - from my understanding the Exclusive needs a vehicle with a minimun 1850 tare and that means that quite a few bakkies I thought may be good, don't even get past the Tare situation - please can you folks help me by giving advice on what you use for an Exclusive or what is a good towing vehicle for this specific caravan
Many thanks Mark and Lesley
hi mark an lesley, i tow my exclusive with a colt rodeo 2.8tdi and overcame the tare issue by installing a vacume brake unit to the bakkie and the caravan. although i see a lot being towed with rangers which i believe meet the tare requiments.
THis is a topic one can talk a lot about. I would start at looking at the weights as used by the enforcers. Look for the Gross Combined Weight and work from there. Also a lot of manufacturers give lower towing weight than their tare weight. This we have to adhere to in case of an accident.
If the combined weight is 4000 and the caravan is 1900 it implies the bakkie can be 2100. If the tare is then 1900 or more you are fine provided the max to tow is not limited by die make and model to 1500. You can thus load 200kg on the bakkie.
Welcome to the forum.
Danie has basically said it all.
As for touring for a year, strap yourself in. Once you start, you will find it difficult to stop.
I recall many years ago, in the pool at Eiland, I was speaking to some fulltimers who started the same as you. The man, cannot recall his name, said to me they started with a one year plan and rented their house to someone. After a while he added....."....and that was ten years ago!!!"
Hi Mark.
Danie / Mark. Groot askuus. Danie yes dit moet oor 400nm wees. Dankie vir die regstelling.
You can tow an Exclusive with a Hyhundai Atos as well if you are willing to travel at 20km/h. You will understand what I mean by this.
It has been pointed out that you must check the weight towing capability of your vehicle, that is apart from the Tara and GVM comparison and you must ensure that you have ample torque to ensure a smooth and easy tow.
I see that you mention a bakkie.............. have a look at some of the SUV's as well. Yes initial load capability is much less but the Tara on the other hand is a bit higher.
