Hi All, We are going to Richards Bay in july and request any advice on the best route. Google gives me 2 choices, the N17 to N12 or the R34 via Standerton. I am worried about all the heavy traffic avoiding the toll roads. What about using the highway to Durban and then up the coast to Richards Bay? What is the condition of the roads on the two more direct routes? Any advice would be appreciated .Thanks

Slim, the only way I know is via Volksrust. Just after you turn L then up the little hill then turn R, stop and eat the chicken that you cooked on your engine, and look if the dead snake is still in the little tree next to the road...

then on to Wakkerstroom

Now believe me there is nothing wakker in Wakkerstroom except the house prices.....

After not-so-Wakkerstroom you will go through a huge cutting, and as you go doooooown the other side, if they are painting the lines, don't clip all the road-cones and watch them spin off... Mr. uniform will make you go back and put them alll back again... (see my post Elvis Presley en die stoutgat)

Anyhow onto Piet Retief where Mr. uniform's don't take kindly to friendly jokes like "I can't understand how this is possible, I never travel less that 200Km's down this road".

Oh and make sure you got some duct tape & alcan foil to fix your broken exhaust... You may have to do this a few times before you get there....

Oh and make sure your altenator's fine, if not, don't panic, just switch off your headlights, (then your car won't hupple-kripple) and crawl up the butt of a dude towing a caravan.... Hehehehe

SIGH..... I enjoyed those days....

OH, BTW, if you go the way that goes past the battle of blood river, take some time to go and see... Feel the place, imagine the battle... be proud Ons was ongelooflik taai... Before it's another monument that get's destroyed....

Sorry for the hijack, but you sent me off down memory lane....

Whichever way, have a great day, and a safe trip...

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....

To Durban and turn north at Durbs if you can live with the tolls.

We have been to Richardsbay in December and I took the road via Ermelo, Piet Retief, Pongola. Must say the road was good with no potholes and few heavy vehicles.

Gentelmen, thanks for the advice so far. I still have 2 months to plan but I am leaning towards the durban route. This adds about 170 kms to the journey. Sitnievasnie's historic way is also on my radar. I'll keep you posted.

Slim, I just want to add, that if you use the Piet Retief route, you do not have mountain passes.
Enjoy your travel and holiday.

Hi All, we have just returned from Richards Bay and report the following. We travelled to the park via Piet Retief on a sunday, the road was in a good condition most of the way but numerous trucks on the road made overtaking difficult. We returned on the N3.A longer journey with a head wind most of the way,but much easier when towing. The tolls on both routes are scary but if you use the roads you pay!!
