Imagine you are a first-time caravanner , you've had your purchased caravan delivered to the campsite which is 2 hours drive from the nearest repair centre and you find the following;

gas bottle promised is missing

tentpole connectors and pegs missing

2 tentpoles missing

microwave not working

geyser inlet/outlet fittings broken off

shower fitting promised not fitted

radio aerial promised not fitted

all 3 roof vents leaking

aircon remote missing--you cant operate it without.

I gave Jaco the benefit of the doubt on some issues. He promised to pay for the gas bottle, half of the microwave cost (fitting at my expense), to send the shower fitting and radio aerial. As for the remote he is adamant he put it in the cupboard that has the cutouts for glasses. If so it has slid down into the false bottom and is unretrievable without dismantling the cupboard. Its my problem.

In order to at least have water supply i had the geyser bypassed only to find leaks one after the other, fix one and it leaks elsewhere. But he ran the pump for an hour flushing the tank,no problems. And 'his guy' checked the tent and accesssories-------of course it was all complete.

Its been a lousy experience. Im in poor health, he knows, so i'm relying on the kindness of strangers for help in attending to issues. And guess what? Its 2 months laterand he still hasn't made good on his promises.

Sorry Jaco, all those benefit of the doubts i gave you? I take them back.

Sjis Basil this is a real bad experience with your first camping in a caravan. It just shows you one should not part with our money unless you are happy with what you get. I can just imagine that things are even worse when one's health comes into play.

I just hope with you that some items can be sorted out and your camping will be fun moving forward.

Regrettably in this day and age society generally, and not only business, is littered with scoundrels. Thanks to social media it is now possible to name and shame them.

Good luck.. At least you got the caravan delivered ;-) I am surprised that you did not end up with nothing as it easily happens these days...

Basil, thanks for sharing this with us.

Surely I will not deal with such poor client services company. We must highlight these poor companies so that they can be avoided.

Camping Forever, enjoy

Newby, This is shocking and need to be made public, as you did.  However, to help us not deal with this person, you have to name the company please.

This is a real bad one.

Thank you for mentioning the name, especially for somebody, which is in the market for a replacement.

I will bypass his ad's and shop around somewhere else.

Basil

Sorry to hear about your sorrow.

Any chance of making use of the Consumer Protection Act and get out of the deal at full refund?

Thanks guys. I see that the website address on the business card does not seem to exist anymore. With regards to taking it further, well , i'd rather do without the stress and probably get nowhere anyway. The funny thing is i still said to his father that his son conducts business in a good fashion. Anyway he operates out of Magaliessig in PTA.

I also had the unfortunate experience of buying a van off Jaco Moller (also trades as/with, Juan-Pierre le Roux who could be a "partner" same cell number used as 082 974 1324). His home address can be provided if necessary. We bought a 2002 Gypsey Regal in excellent condition from Jaco (Juan-Pierre) as first time buyers.
We had looked at several other 'vans and decide that as Jaco seemed so honest we would buy the Regal. There were a few issues that we noted and promised to be replaced or repaired, as well as a few other issues noted on arrival at home:
Water pipe from nose to taps was black with mould, replaced at a later stage by Jaco via a 3rd party.
No regulator on gas pipe, replaced by Jaco via a 3rd party.
Damage to side rail on door side to be replaced, 3rd party stated rather repair as to replace as due to structual integrity.
Fridge had a broken shelf in the door which we noted but there was no smell, after arrival at home the fridge stank, door must have been left open with a jar of white vinegar to disguise the smell.
The microwave operated when tested prior to sale but on arrival at home, the microwave rotated but failed to heat a cup of water.
The aircon had filters missing and a leak, discovered by an aircon tech during repair/replacement.
The lower 300mm of the door inner wood was rotten after being assured that there was NO woodrot, even the wood below the door frame is rotten and need replacing.
All the gas struts on the roof and bed had to be replaced as they had failed.
After registering the 'van in my name, we found out it is a rebuild, code 3, which was never disclosed.
The decals were falling off and Jaco, promised to replace with a new set, we are still waiting since 19-09-2019 after numerous excuses and stories as to where they are.
The front window was not cracked upon viewing but we requested a travel blanket to be fitted, upon arrival at home and removing the blanket the front window was cracked.
The rear right hand light lens was intact on viewing but on arrival at home was found to be damaged.
we were assured that the 'van was to go through a roadworthy on the Tuesday, we paid a deposit on the Saturday and collected the following Friday. When registering the Van we discoverd that the van roadworthy had already expired, about 3 weeks after purchase. A roadworthy is valid for 60 days.
We were charged R3500 for a 'van cover which upon arrival at home was found to be vrot and full of holes and tears, it was not a new item as we were told it was. (Later replaced with new one)
The yellow blade was missing the securing pin and the rubbing block was totally worn and the holes for the pin were worn away.
Jockey wheel raise and lower was completly worn out
Yes I might seem to be complaining about minor issues, but as per the post above, this shows the MO of Jaco, who is presenting himself as a dealer "Outdoor Exclusive"
Lessons to be learnt:
Take an experienced caravaner with you when you want to buy.
Take nothing at face value.

Martyn sorry to read of all the things pointed out. Thanks for adding your alert to prospective buyers. You sure highlight an important point to get someone in the know to have a look as well. It seems it is better to see the problems sorted out that thinking it will be done afterwards.

Good luck with your plan of action.

Martyn

Sorry for all your trouble.

Thanks for sharing it. That is how we all keep on learning and keeping each other informed.

Trust your van will be sorted and at least be enjoyed while camping.

Like Jin (Chuck Norris) says, it will get better going forward.

Guys and Gals, no worries, thanks for the kind words, but I am more interested in ensuring that no-one else gets done in by this person/s.

We have already started and replaced the fridge with a fridge freezer and built that in better than it was originally. I think the original fitment was done by a Butcher. We have cut out and replaced the rotten wood on the door with an offcut kindly supplied by Brits Caravans. New gas struts installed on the roof and bed, new aircon fitted, made new cupboard door for beside the aircon. we will turn this 'van into exactly what we want it to be. We just need to secure the new microwave and sort out the wiring and chargemaster 5, first trip should be around March for 3 Night at Bergendal for a training session with a large volunteer KNP supporter.

Thanx for the heads up on this guy.  Sorry to hear about the problems. I really hope you get the van in ship shape condition before your trip.

Keep us posted on the progress.
