We camped since the 1960s, until we got robbed several times at different sites in Cape Town's Southern Peninsula.  The in-house or on-call security seemed suspect. That was fifteen years ago.
We are in our senior season, with a geriatric mix of reduced mobility.  I think we fit the image of many wanting to camp, or even trek from place to place, if only a suitable camper was available.   
The teardrop vans fit the bill, but size does matter. There is an need overlooked by manufacturers who seemingly don't listen to campers.  The need is for a hard-walled, lightweight fixed island bed solution with no slide-out or flip-out parts.  
Nobody really NEEDS a designer kitchen, boudoir, spa and an electric toaster.  No, older people want to do GRAVEL ROADS, sand tracks, etc.  Ever heard of Potjiespram or Kwass se Baai?  
 We older people have built this country, facing extreme situations.  We dodged limpet mines, terrorist attack in church, sanctions, all kind of bad things, as a result of the decisions made by a prior generation.  We sent the Russians and Cubans running, sacrificed years of our lives, careers, etc.  Now, youngsters tell us we should adapt or die.  Already, our sidewalks infested by segways, unicycles and e-bikes, to the abuse of the lazy Gen Z, reduce our habitat.  
 We want to go beyond where the pesky Weekend Woelwaters crack open fake beers and rave until dawn, or destroy nature as they go.  We need to find peace and do so without towing a mansion behind the car.  We need a compact, practical solution.  
People cry for this on every social platform, yet the manufacturing clan don't notice.  Must we start importing what locals won't build? 

I whole heartedly agree with you. We can camp without all the gadgets.

Yes, also in the same boat now. Wife had 2nd knee replacement and battles to bend and stand-up, so little help in getting tent set-up. I also damaged my right hand which will take 6 months to heal and now bladder stone op so cannot pick up heavy objects. So sold the caravan in January ( also needed chassis repairs - badly rusted as it was not galvanised - thanks Sprite ), but look forward to B&B type and self catering accommodation.
Also made my daughters happy - they were always concerned if something happened to me on the road as my wife has never driven my Jeep or towed a caravan before.
