Who has travelled the N12 between Johannesburg and Potchefstroom of late?

Roadworks are irritating the hell out of drivers, especially taxi's and lorries.

I fail to understand the thinking - they are doing short stretches at a time resulting in "laslappie" work. These stretches do not even start where the last one stopped, resulting in old road surfaces ineterupted by new surfaces, bad joints, ridges on which to lose control - you can dodge potholes, but not the difference between the road and bridges which are not tarred - at one stage the edge of the bridge cut a lot of vehicle tyres and guess who had to pay for their damaged tyres.

The way things are proceding, I will be on pension before the road is in a good condition and will not benefit.

I must be ungreatful!

Unfortunately not. It is still tar all the way.

Avoid peak traffic and you should not lose too much time on the road.

If you are towing, be carefull with the wider wheel base of the caravan on the ridges.

If you are towing, try and keep to the right after the Zuurbekom robot unti you are passed the Carletonville turn off - the road is bumpy and has some potholes (If the guy behind flashes, put your right indicator on as if you are turnng- he won't know the difference - there are plenty of turn offsthere).

BIG WARNING

- watch your speed - plenty of speed traps on the road, both ways, I believe deliberately placed in slower areas to catch you out and not to catch the deliberate speedster. If the sign post states 60 - travel 60!

Dr Drake

Welcome to Africa. This is normal in Polokwane. The wife, s Suzuki Swift (4000km on the clock) need to replace spotlight R1500 ex Vat.

What I like the most, the Tzaneen bypass, nothing wrong with the road. So some clever one decided the re-surface the road. Also done in small sections. Now the road is more bumpy than a gravel road. Worst of all, there was not even one pothole on that strech of road.

In the town it is saf to drive on the pavements. Sorry, know I am lying. The pieces of tar that they take out of the road is just dumped on the pavements.

The main road to my house is anightmare. Potholes...just fill with a few stones and paint over it. Tomorrow,  pothole is back.

Suppose this is job creation. No time to do it correctly, but plenty time to do it over, again and again and again.

At last !!!!

Hagar, there is another road from JHB.
Go on Hendrik Potgieter over the N14 PTA - Krugersdorp Highway.
Carry on until you hit a T. Turn right heading West just for about 2km and turn Left on the Ventersdorp Rd. At the 4 way stop you carry on straight until you get a turn off to your left Carltonville. Carry on this rd and after your 2nd 4 way stop entering the back of Carltonville you get a bridge and just after the bridge turn off to your left. Carry on this road to Potch. The last 10km is a bit bumpt but not too bad. I travelled on this road this afternoon back to Brits. From Potch to Brits took me 2 hrs travelling 100km/h. Not much traffic and very few trucks.
I am only here by mercy. What I have is only on loan.

Dr Drake, my kids are at Potch University and we always use the 'back' road from Roodepoort. We drive through Randfontein's main road and the last robot out of town(before that irritating 60 zone stretch) you turn right and carry on straight with this road (past a cement Depot on your left)for quite a few km's until you reach a T-junction. There you turn right and carry on straight with this road all the way to Potch. You will at some point pass the top side of Carletonville. The road is a bit bumpy with a few potholes here and there and not many trucks or traffic (depends obviously what time you use the road, for us mostly weekends). The distance is almost identical if we use the highway.

All depends on where you are travelling from - I work in Johannesburg, city centre and Randfontein has a serious detour with robots affected by load shedding.

In my case, I have found travelling through Eldorado Park is much quicker and will be using this route again from this afternoon.

Yesterday's delay was half an hour plus, at the N1/N12 junction.

DR Drake, from Westgate Shopping Centre area. I agree that if there is load shedding, it can be a problem. I use another route instead of going through Randfontein centre (plenty robots), but that is going to be a bit more difficult to explain if you want to know the route.

David, thanks. It is like Botswana. 60 means 60. A few years ago we were traveling to Maun and it was the wifes turn driving. I think the speed was 80km/h and it seems to keep on forever. She was increasing slowly and hold it a few km and then increasing again. Out of nowhere a traffic cop appears and stopped us. My wife greeted friendly and started to speak sesotho which he understand. He was very polite and invited her to see the actual reading.  She went and came back ant they were talking and talking. I remained seated. I saw him pointing to me and when he got to the car he fined me 50 Pula for not wearing a safety belt en he let her go. I had to got out the car and had to go over to their car where another cop greeted me and he gave me a receipt for the payment. very polite and proffesional. Afterwards my wife said it was because she talked the language that she got free of a 600 pula fine. So he fined us the cheaper fine.

Thanks Ronald.

I am familiar with the area - the problem in using an alternative route via Randfontein brings up the problem of getting to Randfontein without using the N12.

I am aware of a route around the south behind Lenasia --- but to explain with all the turn offs to someone not familiar can only result in getting them lost.

Now it is getting to be too much.

Just when you thimk they have finished with a section, give them two days and they are back!

They have been working on the N12 since August last year and there is not a single section which is complete - patches all over the show.

Now their attitude stinks - there is a spot where a lot of us leave the road and go through Eldorado Park at no risk to anybody - now they have piled rubbish there to stop us and deliberately cause further hold ups - POOR IDIOTS, the 4X4's have just made another detour.

Even more stupid - at the filling station between Zuurbekom and Vereeniging 4 way stop, the speed limit is 60 KPH - they have blocked the figures on the sign post and put their own 100 KPH sign up - That insinuates it is generally not safe to travel faster than 60 KPH on a good open double lane road, but now with a single lane with roadworks 100 KPH is quite in order.
