I am told that you should not run a guy-rope from the top of your tent pole directly to the anchor point on the ground. You should rather run the guy-rope for a short distance down the tentpole, tie it to the pole itself with a knot and the procced to the anchor-point on the ground.
The main reason for this is to prevent wind from lifting the tent from the tent pole. By tying ( more a once fold over on the tent pole, some 150 - 300 mm down the pole) the guy rope onto the pole, and then attaching this to the anchor pen merely secures the canvas/tent to the pole, thus preventing the pole to slip out.
Works very well when needed!!
Dit is hoe ek myne doen as ń voorbeeld.
Basies is al my toue so gespan.

This actually started way back when the rope was stitched to the canvas of the tent roof. It was the roof canvas then in some cases a leather patch with the rope stitched to that. In strong wind it sometimes happened that this stitching tore loose when the rope was directly secured to the ground. Then came the idea to wrap the rope around the pole to secure the roof to the pole and then secure the rope with a tent peg. This way the pulling power or force was on the pole and not the stitching.
This was the main reason to secure the rope around the pole. The benefit was that the pole will also not fall out during these winds.
Take note however if the pole has two sections the bottom part can still fall out then that top part can become a pounding spike in strong winds as it is still attached to the roof.
Friend of mine saw this where the pounding spike was hammering down on a car parked under the rally tent on the rear side of a caravan setup.
That merc had very nasty marks on it created by the top end of the pole.
