Mountain Splendour or Drakensville are both good options. It is more than half way, but leaves you with a shorter drive and an early arrival next day. Just avoid the Bergville road.
Yeah Mountain Splendour is a great caravan park, been there and got the badge. Drakensville although we never stayed there also looked very good.

Ander opsie is by MIDMAR dam, naby Howick.
Bergview by Wimpy by Harrismith het oulike oornag plek. 058 6230255

Hi Hans,
Please tell me more about the Bergville road.
I asked on a different thread but have not seen any response - I am looking to travel, without the caravan, down that way on 17 November and comming back on 21 November.
Hallo David
About two years ago I made the mistake of using that road to get to Drakensville. The Exclusive somehow survived with only a broken wine glass, but more through blind luck than skill. It might have improved and you should be able to do it with a car alone. The really bad stretch was not so long.
Check out the thread "Bergville to Jhb: Alternative route" under road conditions. I nowadays stay on the N3 until I get off on the Ladysmith/Winterton or Estcourt/Winterton road and turn back towards Drakensville. I say this subject to correction as I have no map with me now.
Phone the guys at Drakensville. They should be able to tell if the road has since been repaired.
Just to add to my previous post. The bad part of the road seems to be the one going past the Sterkfontein dam. Another thread dealing with the issue is: "Hlalanathi Berg Resort- Latest road condition 2014". This one seems to be quite up to date.
Thanks Hans.
I have been watching the comments on that road.
I used that road last month, nothing is happening on that road. In a bakkie or SUV it is fine, drive around the craters and the gravel sections are better than the tar sections. In a normal car, take it slow and drive with care. I would not tow a van along there....... unless you have one of those off-roader things.................
