Durban to Kgalagadi and back in 4 weeks
Good Day
Firstly, just want to thank all those on the forum for your invaluable advice in helping us plan our 4 week trip to Kgalagadi and back.
Left early on a Sunday morning to get through the Transkei and arrive at our first stop over, East London, Yellow Sands Park. What a gem of a place and so close to such a beautiful private beach. Pensioners were set up all around for long term stay. Proving it to be a great venue.
Left the next morning for the much anticipated Addo elephant park. Even though we were not able to get a shaded site we had an awesome 2 day stay with some good sightings and of course the abundance of Elephants with over 100 at the one watering hole.
Next stop over was Storms River Mouth rest camp. Fantastic site right on the beach and beautiful scenery but I know now why they say summer in the Cape only starts in November. Watching the sunrise in the morning from our bed was very special.
The following morning, we set off to Nature’s Valley. Very private and peaceful campsites. We did however not realize how clever the baboons were as they were able to unzip the windows of our trailer. Fortunately, we have not kept food in the trailer and it’s all locked outside the trailer and they did not leave any “deposits” inside but made a mess investigating everything none the less.
Our following camp site was probably the favourite of all in the Garden Route, Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Right on the river, beautiful sites with lots of shade. We did the Half Coloured Kingfisher, 6.5km trail walk but unfortunately were not able to see the elusive bird. I’m starting to think the bird is a myth.
Then off for a change to some town life. Stayed over at Woodbourne Resort, just outside of Knysna. My wife braved her first oyster and is now in love.
Our next day was a longer haul to Huewelsig Camping resort at Franschhoek where we stayed for 6 nights. Also, just outside the village.
We did SOME wine tasting, no judging. Beautiful, clean and farmhouse style campsites. Will certainly be back.
Now we started our journey North to Kgalagadi.
Our first stop was Groenrivier Guestfarm , Niewoudtville. Ideal for just a stop over , very basic but clean ablutions.
Then we stopped over at Camelthorn Campsite, Askham. Also just a night stop over with great facilities and very clean.
Our much awaited start of Kgalagadi commenced. We stayed 2 nights each at Twee Rivieren , Nossop and Mata Mata. What a life changing experience for both my wife and I , not only by the game we were privileged to see but the vastness of the area and how different it is to what we have experienced to the likes of Kruger etc.
I want to at this stage congratulate Sanparks for the excellent maintenance of all the campsites and ablutions throughout our trip.
Heading back home we did a long trip through to Vaal Vrede in Douglas, another of my favourites. Right on the river bed and very clean and private.
Last stop was Clarens , we stayed at a little park just off the centre of the village , unfortunately they still busy with building so we only stayed for one night.
A big thank you must go to Dave, Shane, Vanessa and Candy from Afrispoor trailers. This trip would not be what it was without , the ease of towing, comfort, convenience and safety that the Wildcat gave us.
Looking forward to many more adventures.
Hi Peter
Glad that you had a great and trouble free trip. You visited a lot of places before getting to the Kgalagadi.
I myself like to tour like this as well and enjoy the actual towing from one place to another.
All the best for the next trip.
