Currently at Dibiki, Hartenbos Mosselbay and have been here for the past two months, was having a chat with the owner a while back and somehow got on the subject of cars and I mentioned I am a mechanic to which he replied he has an old car which hasn’t run in the last couple of years, nobody around here has been able to get it sorted.

Anyway he took me up to his garage and there is this 1937 chev panel van, however it has jag suspension and brakes, a chev V8 engine and overhaul a really nice turned out " hot rod" he started it but in ran like a dog, gosh it wouldn’t idle , spluttered when revved and was pushing petrol out of both exhausts.

Asked me if I think I could sort it out, I figured I could. Jotted down the serial no on the 4 barrel holly carb [ had last worked on one of these about 25 years ago ] got hold of a friend of mine at Thunder sport in Pinetown [ importers of American parts ] and he happened to have the carb kit on the shelf, ordered it , owner paid and it arrived a few days later.

Whipped the  carb of and stripped it down, it soon  became clear why this would never run, somebody  got in there before me at some time and it was anybody’s guess what they were trying do. Anyway, cleaned everything, installed the new parts, assembled and set up and replaced the carb

Primed the system and now for the moment of truth, Oosie [the owner] turned the key and it fired right up, sorted out a minor fuel leak on the feed pipe and did the fine tuning, could hear the timing was to slow so got the timing light out and moved the timing from the 2 degrees where I found it to the 10 degrees where it should be and re fine-tuned the carb to suit. Now it sounds and revs like a V8.

We took it out for a test run to klein brak and back, WOW , this car now performs as good as it looks, I guess the more I practice the luckier I get.

two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Yea, its something I really enjoy doing, problem nowadays is the not many mechanics have seen a carburettor, distributor, let alone a timing light. today one plugs into a laptop and sets it up from there.

Very nice car. About six months ago when we camped there for a few days  the guy drove the car around the camp, so somone without knowledge must have got hold of the engine quite recently. Well done George!⁸

You are so correct about the "plug in and sort out on the laptop"!

If I think about the hours and hours (days!) spent on carburettor jets (I have a full set of little drill bits to work on these jets) exhaust gas analysers, valve timing and set ups, ...... my word! And today, it is all done by electronics.

Oh well!!

I just love the old V8s.  I grew up with a Galaxie 500 with a 7L thunderbird V8 engine.

I started as an appy in the 80,s and will retire soon now im known as a master tech. But i still.

use the old way of diagnostics . Today mechanics struggle because they don't understand the system
