Just thinking what are the criteria you apply when choosing a camp site and in what order? I always find we choose something and then spend the rest of the time with the nagging feeling that perhaps 'that one over there' may have been better undecided

Up to now something like this for us ....

1) How level is the site (seems however that the eye can be deceiving sadly)

2) How far are the ablutions

3) Electricity box

4) is there some shade (preferably in the afternoon)

And that's about it in that order .... interested if any other things should be considered. When it comes to trees also maar a bit bang for what stuff can fall onto the caravan/tent ......

Time passes so slow between camping weekends demmit :(

Very much the same as you Bennie.

Depending where I am camping, the view can be a high priority at the expense of the more logical things to consider such as protection from the weather elements. Scottburgh is an example.

I agree with Hendrik concerning the view. Then we also like to be at the end of driveway in order to avoid all the traffic

If I have the following, I am happy:
Close to Ablution block
Shade if it is hot weather
A water tap nearby
Grass, paving, stones, but do not like big patches of open ground

Colin wants a level stand and always worries about which direction the wind is going to come, where the sun comes up and where it sets.

When we are allowed to pick our own site, it sometimes takes quite a while before we are both happy. And an argument or two along the way!!

Nice one BigBen..

Assuming it’s not a pre-allocated site….

On a high spot (water runs-off, and not makes a jolly Loskop dam on my pitch!..surprised..cry

(Been there done that....Had to dig 2 long drainage ditches first up-side to stop more water comming in, then down side to drain what was already damming up, all that in the wee houres of the morning, then, a cry for help, and dug another for the two gals further down-flow, to drain their side tent).... Sheesh....But that was another adventure...

Secluded / a good distance from the next bloke (if possible)

Well away from places like game halls / entertainment rooms / cafeteria / snoepies / swimming pool / trampolines / play-parks ETC & communual braai areas...

No thorns, reasonably level, shaded, able to pitch facing North or South (specific to my trailer) and sheltered…

Kinda that's my nit-picking priority...

Slightly quicker downhill....
These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....

Some excellent ideas coming up, I prefer shade and grass or paving. View is very important. The wife wants to sit next to the ablutions for the dark timeslaughing, to solve that, I am now carrying thd porta potti with.

Try to get the wind from behind the van, and max shade.

These preferences are not allways possible, but one try to accomodate most of our "needs".

More or less level, electricity box not much of an issue, have a loooong power cord! View, especially at the sea, one of the reasons I'm not too keen on Dolphin in Ballito (park is great but no view and no sea sound), prefer to have the sea on my doorstep (after all it just cost me an arm and a leg to get there). Not too close to the ablutions scared I have to listen to some unearthly early morning and late night sounds!; but refuse to use a porta potti (to me it feels like I'm then sleeping next to a long drop!), so it is a bit of a mission to walk to the ablutions but thats OK for us. Very important, neighbours, I learned to love pensioners next to me, they tend to be sleeping at eight in the evenings (saam mettie hoenders!), keeps me happy as there is no noise and they do not have big boom boxes in their cars. And then never ever a stand on the main road into the park, its those older Isuzu 280 double cabs with their Perkins diesel tractor engines (at least sounds like that with their loud clatter!) and "diesel & dust" smells as we called it in the Army, in the early mornings that drive me nuts. And never ever under a tree, apart from branches falling down (especially careful for those big Bloekoms) its also the gum and bird poo on my van and tents that are a big no-no (SWAMBO disagrees on this one, but then she has to clean it and so I mostly win that one!)

All of the above makes sense. Warren has the most valid point; a hill always beats a dip when it rains a lot!

With a big van accessibility is an important factor. Quite often you are told that "all our sites are the same size", only to find that with the tree in the middle it might work well for a tent but not so much for an Exclusive.

We don't like sand, at all.
Prefer well grassed, otherwise will settle for well kept paving.
Near ablutions, but not critical - use Porta-Potti, in need.
Have more than 30 metres cable - electrical point a must but distance not too big a concern.
Taps not too important - fill a bottle for small usage in any case.
In summer, shading is a must.

We still do the recce trek to the bathroom (we have a porta loo but I am a little averse to sleeping near it) so reasonably near is ok i.e. within sight I guess.

We generally don't end up at camps with a view (seaside anyway) as they are booked out as people leave ...... or do I have that wrong?

At Krugersdorp game reserve some years ago we did have a site along the fence and that was really lekker!

Think it's time to get a longer extension but how long is 'long enough'?

Everyone above have valid considerations. Can't say I like camping on paving, and prefer grass, so a well grassed site that is level and not hollow for rain to collect is a consideration.Would rather walk a distance to the shower/toilet than be too close. We also keep water in a 5l bucket with tap so not too worried about taps location.

Freda, interesting to hear you also argue about setting up, wife and I usually spend 1/2 an hour trying to work out the best orientation to place the caravan so I usually give her that time to make up her mind otherwise she is never happy. She wants the back door to open out facing the mountains so we can lie in bed and see the mountains in the morning, but then we also like the awning to face our friends who camp with us. Probably the most frustating time of camping as I am impatient and my wife takes a while to be happy everything is set out just right. After driving I just want to get the schleb of setting up over and done as quick as possible so i can relax. Some people look like setting up is part of the whole camping experience to be savoured, to me it is a neccessary chore to get done as quickly as possible (Usually takes us 2 hours).

Duncan, do you move a few sites to get closer to neighbour with ice machine so you can share or do you move away because he is going to be the one in the park having a big Brandewyn Partytjie and making a big noise?

PaddyandPaul, once I have been satisfied with the 4 preferences in my post, I'd rather not interfere any more. Then I let Colin decide which way he wants to face, etc. I can only stretch my luck so far, you know. It is deciding which plot to choose that is the problem. The moment we look at a plot, I check, where is the ablution block, where is the tap, is there shade, is there a lot of open ground that can cause dust and dirt. If a plot is not level, I am usually the one that makes the sacrifice, I'll let you know. But he wants to accommodate me as well. The joys of camping..........

Any site, within reason, is great, but upon arrival put big plastic trumpet(toy), big drum(toy) and one of those plastic scooters with the hard plastic wheels in prominent position and in full view in front of the caravan and usually , somehow, very few neighbors!- we are pensioners so no kids around to make use of the toys we take along! --Just joking- we love the little ones

Ons is ongelukkig nie so bevoorreg nie, alhoewel ons ook geleer het om daarsonder klaar te kom.  Maar dit is die groot rede hoekom ek 'n kraan en die ablusie redelik naby wil hê.smile
