Howsit all..

Have you ever heard of or cooked with a WOnderbag? its a heat retention cooking bag made of fabric and stuffed with polystyrene. You bring your food to the boil (on stove..) for few min...place in Bag which retains the heat and it contnues to cook..becoming very popular in UK and US. and guess what its made in SOUTH AFRICA..IN the old days it used to be called a wonderbox or a hay box. Great for campers or if you going on a hike and wanna come home to a hot stew. It also keeps goods frozen for 12 hrs. with no ice packs. found this blog online.

I found mine from someone in Cape Town.this is the page www.wonderbagrevolution.weebly.com for less than 200 bucks

Fahms, welcome with first posting, although member for long time already.

We've been using a solar oven, for a few years, weather and sun permitting!!!, and it works very nice.

http://www.sustainable.co.za/energy-efficiency/solar-cookers.html

Unfortunately very bad picture from their website, I will, if there is anyone interested, place some personal photos of mine in use.

Thanks for the Welcome...I use my Wonderbag in daily cooking as it saves bucketloads of gas.!! and as a busy mom i dont have to worry about attending a pot of food. It never burns..so its so appropriate for campers cooking on a hot fire..
Love the freezing ability as i can go on a picnic and take along ice cream and stays frozen about 4 hrs. ..weve also taken along pots of food on day trips to the mountain or the sea. And the Wonderbag keeps it piping hot.

you can email me for more info fahmieda@gmail.com..or 072 834 3888/whatsapp

Ive also heard of a solar water heater. cant come to the name now..tseza box of something like that...tried googling it...you fill this box with water takes 10 litre..and place in sun....ittakes a few hours to heat up and you have 10 litres of hot water ...esp when u have dont wanna make a fire..or ran our of energy. that aso goes for about R200..

Frans i checked out the solar stove its really awesome if theres no energy source.!! but also pricey..and u still sit with the issue of having to watch the stove while your food is cooking whereas you can be out birdwatching hiking while the food cooks safely in a bag.t @Durbs...WIth the price of elecricity and load shedding his bag can change so many lives.

Fahms, fortunately I bought mine through someone else, at R400 postage included, about 5 years ago. I also think the advert on that linkis a bit pricey.

We prepare the basic meal in the correct black cast iron pots, and I put the cooker out in the sun (summer time) by 7 in the morning, by 9 we put the pots into the cooker, and leave it, It also won't burn, by 13:00 0r 14:00 it's ready, and we leave it out until 18:00 when I take it into the house.

Sometimes we prepare a meal to be ready by 13:00, it is actually also same as slow cooker, and we use some recipies from slow cooker.

It is easy to build yourself as well. The idea sprung up in the early days of 2000, when it was developed to help people in rural areas. It did not succeed, because they are so used to making a fire, and the cookers were stolen with pots and all!!!

When camping and it is a hot day we full 2 x 5l plastic bottles with water and leave them on their side in the sun. We use this hot water for washing small items like cups, glasses etc in a wash basin. We saw this idea when camping. This person had a few 5l bottles on the roof of their caravan and had interconnected them with a hose pipe and used this hot water to wash their dishes.

. That sounds like a great idea, I must try this out, this could also work for a shower. That's what I like about the forum, some one has some ideas and share them with all who reads it.

MArg, Elnor, you do get plastic type of "hanging" containers that can work as shower as well, we have one that is sometimes put in use for using at home, especially when the house worker comes, you can have fairly constant supply of hot water (if the sun shines!!!!) and at camp as well. We used to use it for getting hot water fordoing dishes (too lazy to walk to ablutions!!!)

I will try to get photo and plak  it here some or other time. Nowadays you get cheaper model at Checkers Hyp., but if you look at that R40.00? odd product, make sure you use very good glue to glue the outlet tap properly, you might end up with landing underneath it and opening tap, all the 10liter or more HOT water upon you!!!!

In spite of that, might be easier than the 2liter bottles, although the bottles works fine, especially when you spray/paint them BLACK, or put it on table or where ever covered with BLACK cotton or whatever material cloth,. The BLACK thing is attracting the sun rays!!!!

Dis ongelooflik. http://wonderbagrevolution.weebly.com/
