Just been looking for a caravan spot at the coast for December. Where do these guys come from with their tariffs? Between 500 and 600 rands per day for a family of 4 !! Off season for the same site is around R120-150 per day. After more than 20 years of caravaning I'm strongly considering giving it up. Caravaning used to be fairly cheap in comparison with chalets etc. Not these day anymore. Just thought I could air my fusstrations.

Charlie I am with you all the way. We usually went to Dolphin Holiday Resort during tha April season but stopped going to any Natal Resort due to their hi tariffs. And this was back in 2006.

While visiting Dolphin every year we picked one day of the stay (Usually a rainy day) and visit every possible Caravan resort along the coast from  Zinkwasi close to stanger down to Bazley Beach on the South Coast. At that time it was clear that all the Natal Resorts came together at least once a year to discuss for a fact the tariffs for the next year.

All of them charged roughly the same even if the resort did not have much to offer compared to others. I personally can not pay R625(Tariff for April this year Dolphin Holiday Resort) for a patch of grass and ablution facility with a bit of 220V per day. The thing that actually got to me was in 2005 I payed about R460 for a camp site at Dolphin and at the same time my parents rented a holiday flat for 6 people on the beach 1500m down the road.

I personally think that these hi tariffs of the Natal Resorts is going to bite them in the near future. In 1998 April season the Dolphin Resort was fully booked. 2005 we counted about 15-20 stands empty and that even during easter weekend.

Give them time their greedyness will catch up with them sooner or later. Probably to our loss, cause if the income drops the resorts usually sell the property for development. So be it!   For me there is a line to what I will pay for certain things.

Hi everyone,

What should we be paying for 4 people during high season at a camping resort?

To compare, what is the going rate at other resorts in the country, or even what is the going rates at hotels, chalets or other accommodation options?

R550 for a prime site close to a top class beach in December is not too bad in my book.

Besides there are cheaper sites and cheaper periods during the year.

You pays your money and you gets your dues.

Keep in mind these guys need to keep their resorts going with the money they earn in the peak seasons. My 2c.

I enquired at a caravan park in Knysna a year or two back for peak season and that was R750 per stand per night!  4 of us stayed at a mid range hotel for less than that per night including breakfast!

For me R400. And then the resort must realy be fantastic.  Things like programmes to keep the kids busy is things that a resort provide to make me wana go to that resort instead of another, you can't charge for it, cause some campers don't have kids.

There are still a lot of R400 resorts or less, which I visit through out the year. I leave the expensive resorts to the guys that usually don't have a problem with value for money.

One example with out using a name. During this year there was only ONE caravan resort that saw it fit to advertise/represent  themselves at the BEELD OUTDOOR SHOW at Galager Estate. I watched them trying to hand out their flyers to some of the public and got a clear shoulder from the public, so much so that I could not stop myself laughing out loud. My wife had to probe me in the ribs and pull me away.

Last year I made a prediction that this resort is going to loose alot of clients due to their HI tariffs and attitude towards campers. Listen closely! It is not long then loyal clients will find other resorts with better rates.

Just for interest this past Easter I camped 100m from the sea for R90-00 per person comparred to R625-00 for 4 (R150-00 per person) but if we were only two it would have cost me R312-50 per person.

@Ray Walker I have a family of 5, so I'd have to pay R500 per night. This is quite steep! As regards your claim of no extra charges, your website 'Rates' page is full of extra charges! It conveys an attitude that you are really going after the campers...

In general, guys, try the Parks Board campsites. You'll pay less than the commercial resorts. This suits my style - I prefer a rustic resort but may not suit some other campers who want a lot of amenities. Also, their plug points are limited to 5A, so no kettles or toasters. I recently camped at ATKV Natalia - a very well equipped resort and for my family of 5 we paid R255 per night in total, in school holiday periods. It was almost 100% booked out for the last week of the holiday. I don't know what they charge in the high season, though. Good for us, it was a half hour drive from home to the resort! However, when we left on Sunday, the resort was virtually empty.

One must realise the financial realities these resorts face because most of the time, they are just getting by, but have fixed overheads to cover.

It's still way cheaper to camp than to go to a hotel or guest house. And to be honest, I prefer camping. But I do agree, that you tend to get the impression that these resorts are going after us.

Where did that comment come from?

Nothing wrong with the resort owner punting his business and I see nothing misleading in his post. And no I don't know him from a bar of soap!!

I quote from the Marlon website:

"Only one add a room OR pub tent per site. (If you put up a add a room & a pub tent - you will be billed R50/night for an extra tent). Small dogs permitted on the site - out of season with prior arrangement. R20/day charge for a SMALL dog.

2ND CAR R20 PER NIGHT"

That's hardly "No extra charges". The gentleman is welcome to punt his business, but he's being a little economical with the truth!

That's just my 2c. Sorry to offend some of the forum members.....

We've been holidaying on the south coast at Scottburgh  for the past 6 years - only 2 of us and we pay rates for 4 persons.    However, whilst many complain about the in-season daily rates being steep consider this.    Do a comparison of rates for the same periods in a decent hotel, a chalet or holiday home and I doubt the cost per person per day would work out cheaper.     What price to pay for the freedom in the resort, the full on sea view 24 hours a day and so many friendly people passing by, and a beautiful bathing beach within a short walking distance.     I think after all is said and done, what does your holiday mean to you and what are the important issues for an enjoyable holiday?   Save each month towards the holiday fund and then it's not that bad.      My son and his wife - only 2 people - paid over R1000 a day for an apartment during high season in the same  south coast area  in Dec 2009 whilst my husband and I paid R500 per day in the caravan park which is well maintained, and abolutions kept spotless.

Hi Charlie,

Have you checked  out the prices of Chalets in December lately?? We are regulars at Salt Rock Caravan Park ( www.saltrockbeach.co.za ) in July every year, and their price for December is only R530 per night for the caravan, 1 car and 2 people. We were looking at Chalet prices in Manyane ( Pilanesberg, North West ) for December, and the cheapest rate was R4000,00 for a 4 bedroomed chalet PER NIGHT. Still no comparison pricewise imho.

Vir diegene wie voel 'n vakansie moet by die see wees, ry dan liewe Kaap toe.

I need to agree with all my fellow campers this is getting just to expensive, we have also resorted to opting for a 14 day stay in Kruger Nation Park this year @ R175 per person = R4900 for two weeks, that's bargain, and to top is all the KNP facilities like swimming pools, bathroom and communal kitchen with deep freeze are fantastic and well kept. People comment ohhh it's to hot in December in KNP so what, 1 min walk and you are in the pool, it's hot at the beach too, It's only the beach we would not see, but that's why KNP have excellent pools, and in place of the beach we have wild life all the animals pay you a visit at caravan park fence if you don't want to drive every day!!! If coastal caravan park charge per person rates it will be more fair why charge a standard rate R550 - R600 per stand example 2 people can never use as much electricity or water for instance that a stand with 4 to 6 people they should consider charging per head, we are 2 so why must we pay for a stand that can accommodate up to 6 people. Mr Coetzee can you please give into of the stand you could pay R90.00 per person 100m from the sea?

Hi Ronnie & Hanlie.

Inquisitive why you are paying R175 per person. Is the tariff not R225 per campsite for 2 persons during high season?

Geez some of you can moan , try book into a hotel (high season) of repute and see what you are going to get for their prices a day .Definitely no childrens program ,no open external facilities without slepping out the the room down the lift out to a small crowded pool and not enough grass ,no braai , no fridge next to you loaded with your favourite beves (except exhorbatint hotel bar prices). Then the room size eish even if it is raining give me my caravan and tent and I will pay R150.00 a day p/p.Every owner has to make a living and this december holiday (natal coast) my kids that will be visiting us equates to R100.00 a day per person (price per stand max 6 persons).Even with just my wife and myself I could not stay on durbans golden mile at a hotel for that price.
Life is about choices ,enjoy them.

I luv money and get the best value out of it.
