Hi everybody,

First meesage in the forum.

I would like to buy a Caravan Sprite Splash but I am not sure that my car a Captiva 2.4 Petrol automatic can tow it easily.

Could anybody confirm that it will work ? We like to travel throughout SA. CPT, Durban from JHB.

Thanks

Hi JD

It looks like it should be fine.Your tare for the vehicle is 1770 the Gvm for the splash 1330kg.Your nm is 220.I reckon that is ok just do not overload the caravan my 1c worth.

Hi Jd,

Sorry Man,Welcome to the forum I am sure you will get good advice here. The car weight must be more than the caravan weight by law.

Hi JD, welcome to the forum, all your questions can be answered here. Why don't you contact any caravan supplier for better advice, sure they should have all the advice you looking for. Once again welcome and wishing you many happy outings

Hi JD,

I've had a 2.4 Captiva manual and it had a hard time with my Sprite Swing. My current Kia Sportage 2.0 petrol auto performs even better.

Your auto will even take more power away. Mountain passes will be a particular challenge.

My 2 cents,

Jacques

Durbs, you must NEVER ask any "caravan supplier" stuff like this!!, they will convince you that you will be able to haak en sleep an Exclusive with 1600 Polo!!!!!!e-he-he

Johan,

Welkom by die forum.

I had a Captiva 2.4 Auto with which I towed my Gypsey Gold (Regal Specs). It towed ok but was a bit flat. There was plenty of gear changes in auto and I tried the manual option. Wasn't happy with it when I compared it to the Captiva 2Lt diesel manual I had before. Consumption was around 14 to 15 lts per 100kms. Changed back to a Captiva 2.2 Diesel Auto. What a pleasure. Plenty of power and consumption ranges from 11.5 to 13 depending on hills/wind etc. I tow in auto and hardly ever drops below 4th gear.
Hope this helps.

JD, trade that petrol for a diesel, much more torque, no struggling in wind and uphills. That 2.4 will stress you endless!! By itself is lazy enough.

Or get 'n Hyuandai Santa Fe or Kia, diesel, diesel, diesel!

BIG TIME!!

I have the 2.2 Captiva Diesel Automatic and always tow in automatic. Never use the manual facility. A pleasure to tow with. at the end of 2015 we did a 7000km trip from Durban down to Cape Town, up the West coast and through the Northern Cape. Except for 500 kms the rest was towing and comsumption averaged 12.1 lts per 100 kms. Used cruise control a lot particularly in Northern Cape. What a pleasure.

Thanks for your feedback Allen. I read about other automatics that 'hunts' between gears and over heat in top gear etc.
I feel much more ralaxed after your feedback.

I promise you you wont have a problem. In fact I am taking delivery of a new Captiva 2.2 Auto on Tuesday and would certainly not do so if I had a problem.
Enjoy the towing.

Thanks again Allen. I am realy much more ralaxed about the vehicle. Bought it in December and could not test it yet. It must be run in before towing (1800km according to the owners manual). Went to Toti over Christmas and now have almost 3000km on it. So I am ready... It truely is a lovely vehicle.
Hope you enjoy yours and will have many happy kilometers.
