Boere war Route Kwazulu Natal
Afternoon,
I am planning a trip (4x4 Amarok only) from Cape Town to Richardsbay ......due to so many options/possibilities I am finding difficult to decide on a route without missing some great areas. I must include the Boer War Route........
For those who have done this trip please share your trip plan, experience and advise.....I will appreciate
Thank you
Johan

There are many Battlefield sites in Natal; Colenso, Spionkop, Majuba etc have fun planning your trip. We stayed at Kwa Rie in Dundee for a couple of months to visit them. Did not really do any planning just looked up the different battles and did daily trips taking as many as possible in each day.
Morning,
Thank you Brian, I will explore same, great idea to use Dundee as base. Are the roads leading to Kwa Rie accessible for a Jurgens Classique caravan?

Johan, absolutely we got our large caravan in and out without of the park easily and the roads were good. It was about 10 years ago but I have not heard of any bad reports regarding the roads on route.
Enjoy the battle fields and update info here as you go, we had a great time doing them.
If it would fit into your itinery the Magersfontein battle ground just south of Kimberley is worth a visit. This is the site of the first battle between the invaders and the defending Boers and where the invaders got a bloody nose. There is a nice museum and the Boer trenches are still visible due to the very low precipitation in the area. The Macgregor museum in town also have exhibits of this heroic battle between the largest empire in the world and the small number of patriots.

Our Campsite at Kwa Rie Dec 2012.
Johan while we were at Kwa-Rie we visited the following battle fields and there are more we never got to.
Battle of Blood River, Blood River Poort, Elandslaagte, Fort Amiel, Isandlwana, Majuba & Oniels Cottage, Maria Ratschitz Mission, Imperial Prince Louis Napoleon, Rangeworthy Museum, Rokes Drift, Seige Museum- Ladysmith, Spearmans Militayr Cemetery, Spionskop, Talana Museum Dundee, Wagon Hill Military Cemetery, Colenso battlefield.

Thank you so much guys......your unselfish sharing the of the info is appreciated, it saves me so much time....!
What time of year would you recommend?
Johan
Johan we have been there twice both over Dec/Jan as they gave us excellent rates for that period, rather than the coastal resorts. Weather was good and not overly hot. I'm not sure what the weather would be like over the rest of the year, hopefully someone else can provide further info.
An excellent brochure come tour guide with GPS co ordinates and brief summary of the battle is available here
