Hi All, there is a bicycle rack on the market that fits over the rear mounted spare wheel of an suv. I am wanting to know whether the spare wheel mount on the Xplorer (2005) is strong enough to carry the weight of two mountain bikes. The feedback I have had is that due to the excessive bouncing at the rear of the van it will eventually rip the spare wheel off. Has anyone perhaps overcome this problem?

If it just hangs on spare wheel then it could also not be very secure , just walk past  SUV and lift off wheel , and bikes gone

Moet nou nie gaan krap waar dit nie jik nie. Tensy jy wil skade ly en geld mors.

Laai die fietse binne die explorer of op voertuig se dak.

Anders Los die fietse by die huis en loop.

The Xplorer is for sure stronger at the rear than a normal caravan and thus can carry the spare wheel there at the rear. But part of the carry capability is that the spare wheel is secured properly and does not have any movement during travel.

Placing the bicycle carrier over the wheel you will not be able to secure the bikes in the same way the spare wheel is done and this will add extra jumping/shaking forces which in turn is further away from the rear wall giving that forces a bigger effect.

If its not possible to secure those bicycles as steady as the spare I would not go that way.

Thanks Leon, that advice makes perfect sense. I will find another way to take my bikes with.

A question about secirity. Is it not just as easy to remove a bike from a normal towbar carrier? Onthou ek is nie 'n gatsaag gebruiker nie so ek sal nie weet nie.

Hi Danie, yes security is always a problem but one will just have to chain everything up, no matter how you carry it!

Thanks Mark. I can only recall the type of toothed belt for adjusting and keeping the bike tied to the frame.
