I use 2 smart chargers on my boat batteries when the boat is not in use. they are on permanently , they cut out when batteries are full and switch on again as the charge drops to hold the batteries full.
The battery's certainly last a lot longer when treated like this, they are now 4 and 6 years old respectively.
two roads diverged in a wood and i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Best to float charge (13.8V), 24/7 365 and boost charge (14.2V) once a month. CTEK and other smart chargers do that for you automatically.

I think I mentioned in a previous thread that I installed 2 cig lighter sockets with rubber caps on the cruiser's front bumper, each connected to a) the vehicle battery and b) to the Deep cycle battery and leave the intelligent charger on one or the other 24/7.

I have a NL dual battery management system in and sometimes when I'm working in the garage, I hear the solenoid switch to either engage or disengage, when the charger is plugged in to the vehicle battery.

This tells me that both batteries are accepting charge.

I must say that the DC one is now tired and needs replacing after 6 years.

I must also add that the DC one is mounted in the engine bay which is not ideal.

I had a second Deep Cycle battery, 50Ah, fitted into the engine bay with a CTEK dual battery management system. My NL fridge would run for about 6hrs on the second battery. On the main car battery, 102Ah, it runs for two days and I can still start the car. NL set to green on the battery discharge manager.

I took the whole lot out and run the NL off the car battery.

Groete,
Paul

My karavaan se battery is permanent op trickle charge.
