Hi,

What is the general feeling regarding towing with an automatic?
I had a Toyota Camry 300 SEI automatic which towed my Gypsey 5.THe gearbox packed up and it was not worth fixing the gearbox vs the value of the car.
I'm worried about my current vehicle, 2008 Mercedes Benz C220 CDI automatic.
It has the c/s setting as well as "manual" +/- to control the changes if one wishes to do so.
What will be best way to tow with this vehicle? Setting S or C?
Manually controlling the changes by using the +/- on the lever?

Outomatiese ratkaste , moderne tegnologie is uitstekend. Beste is om as jy wegtrek dit met die 1st ratte doen, dis net vir die wegtrek ,, daarna kan jy hom in drive/topgear sit en ry. My jeep se ratkas doen ek elke 40000kilos, gebruik hom hoofsaaklik vir sleep en ek tel my wa op met eersterat, dan direk na drive. Elegance weeg ongeveer 2 ton.

Ek vermoed jou camry se ratkas het al seer gekry voor die sleep. Nog n ou generasie ratkas.,, nie noodwendig van sleep nie.
As jy ratkas laat diens op normaalweg 60000kilos, dan moet jy hom laat diens op 30000 as jy hom hoofsaaklik gebruik vir sleep.

Waarvoor staan die S. C (weet nie meer nie ). S dink ek is ve Standerd. Of dalk Sport. Vir sleep moet dit op standerd wees .
Ander een is vir ekonomie, dan skakel hy gouer oor.

Die Camry was al oud so ek dink wel die skade was al voor die sleep.
Die C is standaard en die S sport. Verstaan ek reg dat hy dan in C bly?
My skakelaar ht net D, dan moet jy +/- deur deur die hefboom na links of regs te druk.
Verstaan ek reg dat ek dus met elke wegtrek die ratte vanaf 1 moet reguleer tot in die boonste rat?
OP watter retoere? So 3000/4000?

I tow using the sport function but still in Automatic.

This way the vehicle tend to stay longer in a current gear before selecting the next one.  It is fully auto so it will select the gear which would be best for the driving cenario according to what the computer is programmed to do.

Going uphill it would gear down much quicker than if it would have been in normal drive.

It sometimes even selects 6th gear depending or the road.

Last trip we came back from Devoetpad Kloof and had a strong head wind.

The gearbox played by it self between 4th and 5th gear.

Id suggest that you use S when towing because the car will not go into 1st if you use C (comfort). Also it changes over much slower in C than in S which could potentially leave you in a tight spot if circumstances force you to suddenly accelerate.

Towed a sunway with a Camry 200 se automatic, with no problem at all. As soon as your box start hunting higher and lower gear, lock it in the lower gear to avoid overheating and damages.

Daars hy. Goeie advies.

Ek gebruik ook die + - as die terrein baie op en afs het. Dan los ek hom maar in 4de. Op gelyk pad (vrystaat) kan hy maar self oorskakel.
Dis nie baie goed ve die hitte van die ratkas olie as hyself heeltyd "hunt" tussen byv. 4 en 5 de nie. Dan sit jy hom in 4de..

Oky. Op n diesel is jou max trek vermoŽns op relatiewe lae NM. So as jy met die ratte speel vanaf wegtrek dan ruil/change jy sodat die refs by optimum bly. In my geval 2000 r.p.m.
Weet nie waars jou mercedes se optimum nie so ek raai tusse 2 en 3000r.p.m.
Dws as jy die ratte elke keer plus op 3 tot 3500rpm dans jy in die kol.
Soos Hennie se. Vermy te veel outomatiexe oorskakeling met die wa agter aan wat die olie temperature opjaag.

Hi Richard here
It is interesting to note that car manufacturers in the USA recommend automatic transmissions for towing caravans.
The reason being that the torque converter builds up energy to initialize the start/tow. With a clutch this is not so and one has to slip the clutch to build up the revs to commence the tow/start.
With multi geared automatic transmissions they are very capable of handling gear shifts when required. If a long gradient is encountered then I would recommend manual shift down and keep the revs up to develop the horse power to maintain a reasonable speed.I have been caravaning for 60 years and I had a one manual shift for a short time and that was enough. Many Happy days caravanning. Richard
