Has anyone recently been camping in Addo Elephant Park? Was it worthwhile? I am going there from the 13th of April. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

We have camped at Addo a number of times and always enjoyed our stay. The ablutions are always spotless, most campsites are large and offer some privacy. Unlike some of the Kruger camps that have deteriorated somewhat over the past few years Addo has managed to keep up the high standards that one used to associate with the National Parks. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.

I am thinking of going to Addo in Feb or March next year.

I have read lots of lovely reviews but would like some more specific advice from people who have camped there.

I have just had a look at the tarrif page on their website and it seems that there are a few different types of campsite in the main rest camp as there are 3 different prices ranging from R190 to R230 per night.

One of my main requirements is that my site has a nice view. I can sit for hours and look at a nice view and feel at peace with the world. When we last stayed there a few years ago, we stayed in one of the forest cabins which was completely surrounded with thick bush/trees and no view whatsoever. I did not enjoy it at all. I am not too fussed with shade as we have a gazebo for this and will opt for a view over shade anytime.

Can anyone advise me about which type of site to book or even better, some site no's with a nice view? I camp at Sanparks' Storms River campsite quite often and have a list of my favourite site no's. Once I have paid and got my reservation confirmation, I phone the park and book a specific site. It works like a charm and I would like to be able to do this at Addo as well.

Can anyone help with this?

Hi Alex
We have booked 2 caravan sites at Addo for a week in May 2014. Friends who have been there before say you can't reserve specific sites so the best thing to do is to first look around and find a site that suits you, then go ahead and book-in, giving them the site number.

The 2014 prices are R230 per site for 2 people. Additional cost per person depends on age - max of 6 persons per site.
There is a 40% discount for pensioners for certain days - best see Sanparks web-site for details.

Regards , Doug

@IlseC
Was there in April 2014, follow Alex advise. Ablutions blocks are quite neat, the new restaurant is a Cattle Baron and the spare ribs, one of the best. Game viewing is nice, but somewhat bushy in certain places.
Still plenty to see. Enjoy.
40% for pensioners all year except in April.

I'm going to the park in July but will use my Wild Card and visit daily as I'm not considered a pensioner by SAN Parks until I get to 60  Yell

So I will have to book in somewhere nearby for a month.

@Photoman Alex - We are also going to SAN Parke Stormsrivermouth in December (just after our 9 day stay in Addo). Can you recommend a campingsite or two?

Have just returned from a week at Addo.

Unfortunately you cannot book a site in advance.  Some of the sites are small, two or three very large - we had site C16 which is V shaped - narrow in front and wide ar rear.

Will try and get site-plan into .jpeg format and upload to this post.

ADDO sites, the one next to the communal kitchen (if Free) is quite large and lot of shade. May be good in December.
Stormrivermouth, try to be on the right hand side of the swimming pool
with sea view. Ablutions block are next to the pool.
If you go there, definitely do the walk to the water falls. +- 90 minutes but worth it. Enjoy

One tip for Stormsivermouth (Sanparks) is to check out the sites that you prefer, make a note of the site number and then after you have booked your next visit through their Cenetral Reservations or online, ph the Park Reception (042 2811607) and then give them your booking/reservation reference and ask for the specific site. If it is available, they will book it for you.

I found a small section of really nice sites between the main 2 caravan parks with a few sites and their own small ablution block, right on the waters edge. They are, in order of preference, no's 43, 42, 45 and 44. Some of the photo's here are taken from site no 43. They are a bit far from the swimming pool. but I actually prefer this (Peace and quiet).

Here is layout at Addo - note that there are a few (T) tent sites slotted with the (C) caravan sites. Sites C11 and C12 are to my mind too small for caravans.Addo Caravan and Camping Sites

I would not advise sites between C33 C28 C21 and the ablutions, lots of pedestrian traffic to and from the admin centre viewing area and restaurant. The best views would be at the bottom end in the bend of the road.

@ Photoman Alex - thanks for the site numbers and advice:) We could however only get a "no view" site at Stormsrivier - I assume these numbers are all "with view"....:(

@ Douglas Green - thanks for sharing your photo's and the Addo camp layout with us! So I cannot phone and reserve for Desember there...:(
