I towed a Strata (700 and something kilos tare) with (a) an Opel Astra 160iE and (b) a Renault Scenic 1.6 RXE. Only ever had one problem, and that was a poorly loaded van from Harties back to the Wesrond... lots of porpoising and fishtailing on the %$*(&% road via Lanseria.
I read somewhere about the 85% rule. If your car weighs in at 1000 kg, your van, loaded should come in at 85%, or 850 kg, for comfortable towing. Subtract the food and beers and spare wheel and tent and bicycles (ag, you okes know what k@k liefie and kinders can stow aboard for a weekend away), and the tare should be, say, 700 kg.
Both my towcars, Volvo S60 and Kia Sportage, have T of around 1450-1500kg, which dictates a maximum van mass of around 1250 kg, loaded. This contrasts with the ratings in the manual of 1600 kg!!! Crazy!
When hauling the new van back to Centurion for the first time, I had a lot of porpoising again, this was with the S60. At home I discovered that the spare and the full tent had both been stowed under the island bed at the back, no nose weight to speak of. This has been rectified, will see how it performs tomorrow when it goes for roadworthy and wotnot.
I am also really looking forward to towing for the first time with the Kia. It may not have enough power to pull the duvet off the bed, but we've now done 3,600 km in it, the suspension has settled, and it is really solid on the open road.
Point is, correct packing procedure could make or break towing ability with the RunX.
