Hi. I have not posted in quite a while.

I have been looking for something to replace my Skipper Navigator as getting old and I find it a bit too much to set up the full tent every time I go camping. With the Navigators design you really have to do this for privacy.

I have been looking at smaller van's as I have a problem with storage space at home and also need something light to tow with my Nissan NP200 bakkie. Yesterday I bought a 1991 Gypsey Caravette 2 in very nice condition. For those that do not know this van, it is similar to the Sprite Scout of that time with the flip up back door.

One thing I want to do is to replace the cones on the wheel hubs as they are badly rusted. Does anyone know where I could possibly get these?

The grease Cap on the hub you will find at any bearing, trailer or camp world outlet.  What is important is to take the old one with to make sure the outer diameter is the same.

Other than that remove the caps clean them of with petrol.  Then dump them in a bit pool acid.  The acid will remove all the rust.  Wash them in hot water then spray paint them silver or black.

They will look as good as new.  One pointer................  tape of the part that press into the hub when spraying.  The paint could cause the cap to come of during travel.

By the way you can even do this with the outside hub.  Do not dunk the hub in the acid just paint the acid over the outer side of the hub and remove old paint with wire brush.

If you have a contact for sand blasting have the sand blasted only on the out side.  Then spray paint them with a grey under coat and the color you want.

They will look as good as new.

If the cones you are referring to is the chrome cones supplied when you buy Mag wheels at Tiger wheel and tyre you can still do the above or go to a mag wheel outlet.

Thanks. Yes it was just the Dust Covers which I have found out since what they are called.

A friend recommended Alko and I have just come from there with 2 shiny new ones @ R40.00 each. Quite an amazing business for trailer and caravan spares.

I really like your choice of vans when you moved from Skipper,  if only this Caravet 2 or the Scout would fit into my garage I would follow your lead.  I suffer from limited height of the door, but am not prepared to change wheels each time we go in or out of the garage.

Can the sleeping arrangement be adjusted , changed or whatever to make two single beds instead of the double ?

My current rig is a  Skipper Oyster, and I agree ,it's a lot of  P T putting up tents when approach the Mid seventies mark.

Good luck.

Well done on the new second hand caravan Alex .  What does it weigh and does the Nissan tow it ok? Think you will miss the lightness of the Navigator but should enjoy the easier set up. Did you sell the Navigator? Im 67 now so hopefully have a few years before setting up our model T becomes too difficult.

You cannot really change the sleeping setup. The design it different to the scout so unfortunately it is side by side sleeping and the wife is going to have to climb over me in the night to to to the loo.

I also just cannot fit it in my garage as it is just too high by a few cm and my driveway is on a slope which makes it even more difficult to fit in as the back is higher because of the angle when reversing in.

Fortunately I do have a carport over my driveway and will probably invest in a cover for spots where the sun and rain can still get in.

Thanks.

The tare is 500kg and the gvm is 640kg. The Nissan NP200 tows it fine as the person I bought it from lives in a hilly area and we had some pretty steep climbs on the way home and it was no problem.

I still have the Navigator but will be selling it. As soon as the weather clears up I will rig it up to take some decent photo's and some video footage as I find that this helps a lot when advertising anything for sale.
