Those of you using portable air cons in Pentas, what is your set up? Especially WRT unit out pipe?

It has been discussed before but there is basically two ways to go about it.

  • Buy a window mounted aircon.  Make a proper base for it so that it hooks onto one of the windows in the same way a tray attaches to your car window at a Roadhouse.  Saw this idea at a resort and most of the caravan club members had the aircon mounted like that.  With the window open to accommodate the aircon they just installed a perspex or wooden panel around the  aircon.  Worked 100%.
  • Second is to buy the portable aircon and install it in the middle of the two dinette bunk seats.  if you buy carefully with size in mind you would be able to fit it under the dinette table if your remove the caster wheels on it.  The vent pipe can either be guided to the front or side windows, or you can make a hole in the floor behind the aircon and route the hot air below the caravan.  You do get proper fittings for that with the aircon.

If it was me planning this I would go the window unit way as the caravan club members did it in such a way that it really looked great.

Ek het so n gat in die vloer by dinette waarna Leon verwys.....ons gebruik egter nie die aircon nie omdat Swing maar bietjie beknopt binne is en nie veel spasie vir aircon nie {Ons gebruik die dinette....daarom min spasie vir ekstras}

Het die portable aircon in die huis wat die waterbak onder het.

Maak ook lekker koud.

I use my portable aircon in the dinette of my Palma as Leon suggested. I made a hole to the nose cone and attached the the sliding pipe fitting. It can then be closed when not in use. The downside is that the nose cone lid must be open during operation to allow the hot air to escape.

I’m thinking of making a hole in the back if the dinette and routing the outlet pipe to the tent pole compartment on the side opposite to the door. With the reducer on the pipe the flap will hardy even be noticeably open. The aircon is 25mm to high to fit under the table, so I will just place it there when really needed.

That should work, provided of course that the tent pole cover on the outside remains open during operation. Good luck with your project.

The hole in the floor is easy way to go.  The covers supplied with the aircon usually comes with a lid to close the hole up when not in use.

I was also told to use a marine inspection hatch. They are freely available, cheap, correct size for the outlet  pipe and easy to open and close. Looks like I will take this option.

Yes if you can get hold of it, it should do the trick.  But did your aircon not come with something similar.  The one I have came with a type of fitting that fits to a window the other was something similar as this marine hatch with it own lid should you remove the vent pipe for whatever reason.

Just a heads up for anyone considering going the same route. I tested my portable aircon (Defy 9000BTU) in my caravan this weekend. (at home, yes, yes I know) It works perfectly in the bigger caravan. My problem was that is was a little to high to fit under the dinette table. I was at Makro this morning and I noticed another Defy 9000BTU, but this one looked lower. despite the measurements on the box (and website) 860mm high, it is actually exactly 700mm high. It fits perfectly under the dinette table. And its on special for R4499. Model number Defy ACPHP09K.

Pleasure 👍! Here the twi are side by side. The 45 or so mm make all the difference.  Both 9000BTU , both Defy but the new one seems a lot quieter.

Jeff, we use the Defy which you display on the right hand side for the caravan. Strange enough, we were at Game tonight and also observed that the new Defy is definitely quieter and is priced at R5700.00.

Makro’s price is a massive special. I was also at Game yesterday. (Pretoria, Kolonade) They never had a single portable air con in stock! Mind you a lot of their shelves were empty. The usually reasonably stocked camping section most noticeably so. Strange one week before Christmas.

I also went to our local Game (Westgate) on Monday and the service is shocking. Shelves also not full.

Hennie, we went to Clearwater's Game and there were 4 of those new Defy aircons on the floor if you are interested. There is also a demo one in the aisle if you want to check out the operation.

If you are interested, maybe check out Makro first for their price if it is still on special. Take the pamphlet if it is advertised there or alternately a photo (if they will accept the photo and there is no other option) of the aircon and the price and go to Game if you prefer to by from them as they say they will beat any price.

I see Massmart is going to shed 1400 jobs. Those empty shelves in December were certainly a sign.

I bought the Defy ACPHP09K unit from Makro on wednesday, but the outlet pipe only has an oval outlet which goes into a slider that fits in a window opening. My Fleetline actually has a hole in the floor under the dinette table for a round outlet pipe. Now it looks like I am going to be forced to do a homemade job to get something to fit!
Also, unfortunately the space under my dinette table is only 670mm so the 700mm unit does not fit either!

Went to the local plumbing supply shop and got something to fit the flexible pipe and the 120mm hole in the caravan floor - a sewage drain pipe adaptor (sewage pipes are normally 110mm), and the outer diameter of the adapter just fits into the inside of the aircon flexible pipe - just needs some sikaflex to attach it in place!

Question: Is the power supply at caravan parks ample to pull a portable aircon unit??  Wont it trip the power ??

In some parks with only a 10A circuit breaker one will have to make sure other elec gadgets are not on at the same time. It is a good practise to switch off the aircon when the kettle/microwave/elec oven etc are to be used enven if there is a 15A MCB.

Jeff.

Spaar maklik so 4 na 5 Duisend Rand.

Gelukkig  het die outjie wat my karavaan gedoen het geen snywerk gedoen, ten minste ek sien dit nie. Baie netjies en goeiewerk gedoen

Dalk was my portable se swak performance baie te doen met die installeerder. "Ekke" 🤭

Ek twyfel of die fout by jou le.
