Hi All back from Bloemhof..
Don't care how much "gear to fix a flat' you got, Aint gonna do this baby much good...
Happened at around 03:00 somewhere before Wolmaransstad going there...
Convinced it was an over enthusiastic pressure gauge at a garage where I checked tyre pressures….
Instead of 2.5 I made it 3.5 as the other one (when I checked with my own gauge was 3.5 as well)…
Anyhow, I put on the spare and doddled on to Bloemhof, and came back on Moaning day...
Problem is Moaning day was a public holy-day and nobody was open! Found an african dealing in tyres in Wolmaransstad, an 450 zuptas and a bit of energetic work later all well and the spare is a spare again.
He taught me someting worth knowing.... Once the tyre is on the rim check for leaks around the rim - rubber as well...
interesting.
Thank God you were all ok and nobody was hurt. That tyre is moertoe so they say. Lucky also it was a trailer and not a boat or caravan. Then again are you not tired of people saying always that lucky it was not something else.
Thank full you are ok Warren, things could have been much worse.
Hi Warren glad your'e ok. What was the age of the tyre? Was it realy over presure? Do you remember what the max presure rating was on that tyre? Would realy like to know what caused that?
Hi All
Age of the tyre same as the one on the other side which does not show any signs of micro-cracking...
Yip it was over pressure The other side was at 3.5 (I normally run between 2.5 - 2.8)
Now all things being equal, I could also be at fault, I'm old and vrot and wear my eyes over my ears... could have mis-read the tyre pump at the gararge... Not so lekker bright at night.
Herman, been bumbling round this tiddly piece of real estate called South Africa for donkies year without em.... Besides they don't measure tyre temp...
I use the back of my hand for the temp of the tyre, the front of my hand for the hub temp and my rheumy right eye to look at the contact (flatness of the tyre) between the tar & tyre to guage the pressure... If it looks a tad "long" Ek pomp....
Not very scientific, BUT IT WORKS...
Warren
What is the MAX pressure on the tyre's ?
As they say "Lucky, but not so lucky".
Two other questions:
1) What was the load?
2) What were the road conditions like?

Load? well the tyres ain't scraping the inside of the mudguards (yet0 so I got quite a bit to go....
Road? Usual Sanrail fix-it-up condition....
I have a set with 4 monitors on the Ford and 4 for the caravan, the problem I now have is I cant find batteries for the monitors.
Geert
Dit is daai rode plat horlosie battery CR1632
3 bar.
Tyre monitors... Nice to have, but would not have helped this was a catastrophic and instant failure... Tyre monitors work well with slow punctures / and 4 wheel caravans, (which I dont have).
I'm convinced that: - either I mis-read the tyre pump at Klerksdorp or it was optimistic, and caused me to pump from 2.8 to 3.8 because that was what theother tyre was when I checked with my own gauge.
Kyk by Dischem. EK het daai daargekoop.
Ek soek al van Desember in die Kaap tot nou by elke winkel waar daar van daai platte is, GEEN VOORAAD !!! is al wat ek kry.
Hi Frederick, Age I'm not sure, also history as I bought the trailer second hand.
I'm pretty good at visual inspection... And I have the other side to compare...
Over 80 % tread on both.
Age? not sure..
No visable signs of degredation of the tyre before I departed...
The tyre on the other side, and the spare is in similar condition...
If trailer not being used for long periods I rest the axle on tressles and give the wheels the odd spin now and again.
When travelling I "feel" tyre & hub temp, nothing felt untoward, other than I got the guurte to check the actual pressure (in Klerksdorp)... +- 150Km from JHB
The tyre burst somewhere after Wolmaranstad what 80Km down the road?
I normally run 2.5 - 2.8 (I'm not that fussy) so long as both are the same.
If I misread / faulty gauge then I would have been at 3.5 - 3.8 (That's where the other one was when I checked with my other meter)
What precipitated the failure? Over-pressure & a pot-hole? Something the very wide & big Landy tyress "floated" over and the mari-biscuit trailer tyres caught? possibly...
Thinking about tyre monitors after my widdle-waddle this morning at 02:00 If I had had a set I would have seen that the tyres where over-pressure.... So I have to back-track on not being useful.....
Tyre monitors Mmmmmmmmm Perhaps a good thing after all....
Warren
Check the manufacturing date on the tyre.
Baie Dankie Geert, ek het gisteraand vir die ou mail gestuur by wie ek gekoop het en 'n dame het my gebel om dit by Surette se ou werk af te lewer, klink soos R5 elk.
Sal laat weet.
