Fairhills Caravan Park in
Ramsgate
welkom
ek sien daar is sommer paar vinnig gelys

I tend to differ (based on the experience we had). We rented a furbished caravan at Widenham Caravan Park in Amanzimtoti during the early 90's. I don't think Widenham exists anymore.
We had a fantastic holiday. It was an old caravan, parked permanently in the park. Nothing fancy, rather oldish. But we had a great time. Still thinking back with a lot of nostalgia to that holiday.
Not keen on hiring a caravan at a site, like my own bed etc. I agree with relaxed camper, I would rather have a tent and mattresses.

It will always be my first option to sleep in my own bed. But what about sleeping in a hotel, or guest house or like we will be doing this coming November when we are staying over in Mosu Lodge (Mokala National Park) and in Kruger for 9 nights in chalets/bungalows.
If a rented caravan is neat and clean .... what's the problem? In Bontebok National Park they started with (what they called) Carachalets - stationary caravans with a type of Wendy house in the place of the side tent. It was very neat.
We stayed in one of their newer chalets in August - and slept in a double bed (see photo).
And the same in Karoo National Park and self-catering accommodation in Oudtshoorn.
So why not in a rented caravan?
Its is advise-able that new campers maybe first try the "Camping Thing" by hiring a tent or caravan. Just to make sure its their cup of tea. It could save them a lot of money in the end.
There after..................... my advice it the same as that of Geert. One of the reasons why I do camping is.......... my own bed.
And I will never be able to sleep in a caravan smelling of cigarette smoke.
Hi guys, let me give my 2c here: I rented a caravan twice already just to check if "it is my thing". Despite being time consuming to collect caravan, bring it home, load it, then after the trip return it back (I stay in Randburg and rented in Pretoria), it was a very valid exercise. It is definitely my thing and now I'm looking for a caravan to buy. I learned great things about what work and doesnt work, towing, parking etc etc. Also I was about to buy a Penta and I figured out that the inside kitchen doesn't work, so I'm going to buy a Sprite Splash now.
Cheers.

I support your way of doing it. I know of various couples that bought a caravan just because it seamed nice to have and in the end sold the caravan again within a year.
Experiencing the actual camping feeling is the best way to decide if camping is your thing. The men usually don't have a problem its that other half of yours that needs to be impressed.
Then again buy the caravan "she likes best", is the difference between camping once a year and 12 times a year.
