Are gas cylinders ( Alva, Afrox, Cadac , megamaster etc sizes 3kg - 7kg) with cooker top the same in terms of value for money,  reliability, durability? Cadac seems to have  a bigger market share in this size segment .

What has been your experience with different gas cylinders?

Many years ago I bought another brand from Macro and could not get it filled in my area.

So returned it.

I have used Cadac for ever and never had a problem, the only thing that i have had from them that I was not too impressed with was their small heater, there was nothing wrong with it, I was just vol K....

I still have my 100 candle power lamp, which at the time cost  R7.95. Still perfect.

The only thing I have ever had a problem with is a GAZ stove that fits onto the small cylinder. I still have 2 of them, but the one does not close off the gas.

I mostly use Cadac and fill them at Afrox because they weight what's left in the bottle and only charge you for what they fill.

Last year I bought a 9kg Cadac from Makro and that's the only one they do nog fill.

There must be SABS requirements on gas bottles....so all of them should be okay, but according to me, Cadac is the better product....worth that extra penny

I recently learned about this practice of weighing the cylinder before refilling when I went to a different supplier, I would normally be charged the price of an empty cylinder. I was also told the price fluctuates like fuel on monthly basis , I was not even aware of this. My old supplier’s conduct has left a bitter taste in my mouth, I even felt reporting this supplier’ business conduct.

Last month , I paid at the new supplier R153 for 9kg exchange cylinder, and this month I paid R181 due to price increases of energy on 3rd of June.

I guess we learn everyday.

As far as I know all gas cylinders have an expiry date after which you (theoretically) cannot have them filled.

Any idea on the lifespan?

Quite correct on painted and rusted cylinders, they do not refill them. I am using different brand cylinders, they all work fine. My old Cadac the only one that still has a loose key and not a tap as part of the bottle, a bit of a pain. Luckily the newer Cadacs have taps. I refill at The Gas Company in Centurion, close to Chamberlains.  They always weigh and you only pay for what they add.  Very good when just want to top up fairly full cylinders before a camp.  Saturday past there was a very long qeue down the street.  Everyone wanted gas.

I have recently retired my 1963 model 3lb Cadac cylinder. Had it when I was a boy scout, but hardly used it over the past few years. It did not have rust and I did paint it.

I also use an old 10lb cylinder for extra compressed air for those little jobs where the hose doesn't reach. I have been using this for about 25 years and there is still a very slight smell of gas when I blow something.

An old gas cylinder makes an ideal potjie braaier. Cut the top off my 9kg cylinder (after carefully ensuring no gas is still inside), made three slots in the bottom, little braai grid and potjie holder for the top, and e'voila. Works a charm. Also did the same with a smaller 3 kg for a 1/2 potjie. Works similarly well.

Another thing - after getting the fire going, I use anthracite..... low heat, burns longer that wood or brickets and, leaves no smell, (as some people may think!) leaving you time to attend to other like washing the car whilst the potjie is going!

Is it safe to cut a gas bottle with an angle grinder? What precautions should one take if that is possible?

Fill it with water to get the residual gas out and start cutting with the water still in, just to be safe.

Stem saam - al die gas moet uit. Ek het my silinders se inlaat, uitlaat, knoppies ens. alles oopgemaak en verwyder en seker so 3 weke laat staan om alles uit te kry. Daarna geen probleme gehad nie!

The way I understand it is all gas cylinders must comply to SABS standards so quality should be very similar. I try to stay with one or two makes to simplify the spares I carry. The jets etc. are not interchangable.

When at Easygas one day they refused to fill my No 3 (3 lb) gas bottle because it was light blue. It had minmal rust. The owner explained that the cylinders rust through from the inside. My problem is you can not buy such a small cylinder any more. He suggested that they can test the wall thickness (at a cost) and if it passes he will issue me with a certificate and fill it. Needless to say he also sells gas bottles :) :) :) and I was not allowed to witness the testing (dangerous). It passed, and I am still using it. He also replaced the rubber seals in the tap. Most places just fill it without asking questions, especially if they only fill cylinders, like at the garages.

Paul
