My one mover stopped working the morning we left for Skukuza, just before the lockdown. The motor was working but the roller did not turn.

After returning I removed the mover and started stripping and found the problem after separating the motor from the gearbox. The coupler (not sure what the correct name is) that connects the motor shaft to the gearbox shaft broke on the one side. It consists of 3 parts and reminds me of a dog clutch with rubber in between to absorb the torque.

This is what it lools like.

With the lockdown I cannot source a replacement part in SA and also not in England as the Powrtouch agents are closed. Will have to be patient.

Anyway, while I am at it I decided to remove the other mover and do a complete overhaul on both. Won't be getting to Pretoria for the agent to service them and not sure if they do a complete stripdown as I did.

Amazing how much dirt and grime accumulates in places you cannot reach without removing the mover from caravan. The grease in the secondary gearbox showed signs of water on the one mover. On closer inspection I found that the seal for the cover was pinched on assembly by the factory allowing water to enter.

After 11 years and many kilometers the movers needed a lick of paint.

Motor still to be connected to the gearbox awaiting replacement part.

The motors have also been opened and brushes checked. Not much else one can do inside the motor but clean as the bearings are sealed. The exterior of the motor is still to be painted. No black paint.

Dankie Geert.

Second big job.

With the mover out of the way I have started to re-position the side panel/wall of the caravan that is sagging. If you recall, on someone else's topic I pointed out that my caravan's wall also sagged as a result of the guys in Villiers cutting off the original support to make place for the movers.

These were the pics.

The beam that was cut off can be seen to the left of the motor. Above the motor is the plate they welded on to support the wall. In time this plate bent down from the weight of the side panel. No gussets!

How I noticed it was while on the long tour I saw the gap in the side cupboard. In time it got bigger.

First I tried to lift the panel by jacking up the caravan under the plate. It did lift a bit but weight of the caravan is not enough to counter the bend in the plate and the weight of the panel.

So what now? After much thought I came up with the idea to lever up the panel using rectangular tubing bolted to the beam that is cut off. I am glad to say that the panel is re-positioned temporarily. Will take pics tomorrow of my progress so far.

The parts that you need is not supplied by Viliers.  They will only sell you a new motor.

Please search here on the forum topics where we previously discussed this same issue.  There was a guy in PE if I recall that had the part made up from his son or son inlaw in Cape town.

His contact details in in that topic.  The part cost next to nothing manufactured here in SA.

I will see if I can find that topic on the movers where we discussed this specifically.

Sometimes it helps to share your plans. Last night I was thinking why did I need so much force to lift the panel. My reasoning is that the bent plate is also adding to the resistance.

No way the plate will return to its original shape so I am going to cut it off and make a new support using tubing that will be bolted to the original beam.

Any other suggestions?

I have an old Powrtouch mover of which the one electrical motor broke off (fortunately picked it up) during a Botswana Namibia trip (road?? between Outjo, Khorixas and Uis).

Upon return from Namibia, at the time it could not be repaired (did not really put in much effort to do so...) and fortunately it was replaced by the insurance.

I now have two options:

1. Sell the mover (complete with wiring, controls etc.) in an attempt to recover some of my excess payment (R4 500) to the insurance or

2. Try and source a new electrical motor (two mounting screws broke off - by the looks of it..) and repair the damaged side and then try to sell the mover as a complete unit?

Should somebody be interested in option 1, feel free to contact me (e-mail at end of message) and we can discuss - I will accept R 1 000 for the rest of the mover. I am in Pretoria and shipping (if required) will be for the buyer's account.
I cannot upload images here - do not know how....?

For option 2, I would appreciate any contacts/companies dealing in spares for the Powrtouch mover then I can try and source the required parts??
I will also try their website.

Regards, Egbert

One mover not much use unless someone else is in the same position as you and happens to have the same make of mover.  Why not just keep it for in case?

Tans net 'n stopper in.

2. Die steadies is afgehaal, skoongemaak en oorgeverf. Gegries en teruggesit.

Heel dag geneem. Ek was poegaai hierna. Vrou het binne skoongemaak. Die kombers is ook oorgetrek.

I replaced the last piece of pipe with some hose pipe with a nipple that clicks into my hosepipe for distant draining. The discharge is at/behind my door.

Dankie Richard.
