Sonder Jesus is ek niks! ! ! !

The Happy Campers.

Hi Herman

If Makro is selling a Canon 400D do not buy! - that is an old model. Is it not perhaps the newer 4000D - 18Megapixel , Full HD Movie, WiFi etc. that they are selling?
I have the (also old now) 450D  and have had no problems with Canon.

Groete,
Paul

The latest is the SX70hs which has 65x zoom

I bought this for my wife (in Dec) replacing her SX40 which had 35x zoom

She was happy with the 40, outzoomed me (DSLR) BUT autofocus took a while and second shot took a little time.

The 70 is supposed to shoot more frames per second. We have not really tested it yet.

The video on the 40 was also good.

I handled the Nikon P900 on tour and was impressed with it. Bought a P1000 in Dec, and testing so far I am satisfied with quality. 125x zoom. Still learning it. I decided that I was not going to be a professional, wasn't going to publish and try win competitions, but zooming in on birds was my main priority and therefore did not go for DSLR with multiple lenses.

The Nikon is a big heavy camera in comparison to the Canon SX70.

Just be careful when you buy the SD card. It must be as fast as possible to keep up with the HD video and multi shot. The cheap Chinese ones don't make the specifications.

I also at the time went for the compactness of the Powershot. My old one is only 12X zoom. It is no good to support my birding.

Paul

Agreed Paul. I went for reasonably fast cards.

Looking back at quality of our first Powershot, about 5x zoom, we took some great pictures.

Also my DSLR 450D with cheap 250mm lens took great pics but over time lost sharpness, resulting in lots of disappointment.

Richard....do you think the SX70 will be okay to zoom and take clear pictures of animals 50 to 100m away?

Geert if it were not raining I would do some trials for you. However, i will look through my tour for pics with the 40.

My wife recommends you test and feel the camera. In Macro or a shopping centre, for example you can get a reasonable distance. On full zoom you need a level of steadiness/support (bean bag, tripod etc) It is best to use optical zoom only and not the digital zoom as it pixelates.

The fit, like a hand gun, you should be able to lift point and shoot in one go.

These two pics taken across the river near Shingwedzi with the SX40, 50 meters plus
