Well, I survived the weekend, and I was not too lazy so, remember that surprize of that “upgrade” for my "EXCLUSIV" camper that will turn all you R4000 to R6000 tenter’s. rip-stop, olive-green with envy….

Well here it is then...

The background to this is with my self built EXCLUSIV camper It's fine if there is a couple of hour's of rain, I just climb in the RTT tent & relax... But  if there is an extended period of rain, (say 2 - 3 days ETC), I don't really have somewhere to sit it out.

Then a couple of months ago I went up to the garden refuse collection site (my favorite, shop, the make-your-own-price-store) and one of the "shop-keepers" came running up to me.... he's got a tent... But no poles....

Long story short, R50 later I had the tent on "appro."

Popped off to Alberton Outdoor warehouse, found the Campmore Sierra poles where plug-and-play, ordered a set and a skull-cap, (that thingie over the top) went back to the "shopkeeper" and gave him R100....

Yip one hundred bucks

Then I waited for Outdoor to come to the party.... Poles arrived last weekend...  Skull cap arrived this weekend

I could only do the water-proof test with the poles and the skull cap, so THIS WEEKEND was: - crunch-time...

See first photo: - This tent is definately an ex army tent (see clip on inside from the apex)

Apart from the fact that the canvas is cammo print and therefore unique, it's MIL spec grade (300G + weight rip-stop)

It's 3x3x2.2h and the groundsheet is really very thick

Comparing it to the Campmore 3x3x2.2, which is only 200g weight rip-stop canvas, It cost R4500..

(There is a small tear above the door, and the apex eyelet has almost torn through, both of which I can fix myself).

Played around with a way to anchor the tent, and came up with having to use only 4 outer anchor pegs for all 3 window flaps and to support the poles!

Did the water test... (Then, shaking in my sandels with anticipation, opened up and DRY.....Voila! DRY! (See photo's...

So there! bargain of the year! A comparable tent, with the same grade of canvas, would cost in the regon of R6000 - R6500 (VAT EXCL)

I'v paid R100 for the tent, R850 for the poles R500 for the skull cap R120 for the guy ropes = R1080

Now I got's me a rainy-day-wegkruip plekkie...

Ans see, that's the “upgrade” for my "EXCLUSIV" camper that will turn all you R4000 to R6000 tenter’s. rip-stop, olive-green with envy….

One small problem.... Boy, is it heavy...surprised

Warren, you are a genius and that tent suits you to a T. As usual, you brought a smile to my face.... Enjoy your new tent and hope you have lots and lots of rain, so you can really appreciate your bargain. Well done.

This is what I've found out so far

Hi Warren, not ex-mil (although it may have been bought by some units with cash funds) - these were made by TentCo in Boksburg at a stage using the ripstop canvas over-dyed using "sublimation", I hava a sample piece of this material at home. Nice find though for R100!

Ok, so I googled "sublimation" and it's a l-o-o-o-ng technical story, but I kinda got the drift.

Also, I've mailed TentCo with pics and am waiting their answer... Hopefully today. I asked for the tecnical specification of the canvas (either g weight or water coloumb) as well as how old the tent is....

See, you don't actually have to go camping to be camping... Just as long as I'm doing something camping I'm out there...

That tent is a great find.

Since your expenditures so far are minimal why not spend a bit to improve the skull cap so that you have a bit of a verandah?

Hendrik dankie.

Yes I've thought of that, My Idea is to sew ties under the skull cap and have a seperate veranda awning, also with ties that widens out to about 2M wide   as it gets further from the tent & at least 2,5m long (if you get my plan) and 2 poles to keep it up. Mostly i just want a reen-dag-wegkruip plek / sitkamer in geval dit reen n bietjie lank.

Die huidige kappie is wat ek kon kry... So I'll get to Clive @ Canvas & aliminium for the mod...
